University City, which is the easternmost part of West Philly, can be an interesting place to check out. Lots of ethnic restaurants and bars to enjoy for le$$ than in the Center City neighborhoods.
If you've spent quality time socializing in the DMV, especially the D and M, you won't be intimidated by South Street. If anything, it's rather commercialized compared to twenty years ago. Back in the day, you'd see punk rockers with mohawks roaming the streets at night, especially during the weekend. They've been largely replaced by New Millennium hip-hop heads who stand on the sidewalk preening for each other instead of patronizing the venues.

"New Millennium" as in "younger than the 90's". Just trying to point out the type of youth you're more likely to see as the night wears on at South Street. Although that strip has seen better days, there are still some decent places to eat and drink in between the Gap and Starbucks and such.
