You find it the Lehigh Valley and Berks County. A bunch of whiny dumb dutchies!

I like Center City Philadelphia. There iis sufficient music and theatre options in addition to great restaurants. But, the Philly attitude is annoying after a while. The bottom line is that while I like Philly, it is a 2nd city and NYC is the King. NYers and others who can't cut it migrate to Philly!

Thank you.
AAVC, You & your famiiy should have no problems. I came to the area as a teenager, many years ago, After they aclimate, the kids will be just fine. The people are friendly & helpful.

You'll find immigrants & descendants of the Quakers who came with William Penn.

Philly has some interesting, affordable urban areas just outside center city, like Northern Liberties. People "kill" to live in comparable sections of Brooklyn--Williambsburg and Greenpoint. Similar feel there--factories turned into lofts, rowhouses, vacant lot gardens, artists... Philadelphia beats the pants off New York in vernacular architecture; where Brooklyn outside its brownstone areas, and Queens, are full of very plain tenements and ugly frame rows, areas like West Philly have an amazing variety of Victorian and early 20th century houses with porches, bay windows, lots of decorative doo-dads. And prices are so much lower than in NYC. Philly seems to me a little more like New York than either DC or Boston--not to put either of those down, but a New Yorker looking for something similar but more manageable, more affordable, may find Philly pretty congenial. Like Jersey City or Hoboken, just farther away.

The brick townhouses and brownstones around Rittenhouse Square and around Society Hill are awesome and can compete with anything NYC has to offer. The prices are also much less than the West Village or anywhere in established brownstone Brooklyn!

Nouvelle Villa is on a distinguished road
I've lived in Philadelphia but never lived in NYC, though I've visited quite a bit. However, I've had a number of friends move from Philly to NYC and what they found was a much higher cost of living, and I was always baffled by their transition.

I think Philadelphia is a great city to live and offer some of the same amenities that NYC offers, though on a much smaller scale. What is great about Philly is that if you want, it is possible to own a car and you can get away relatively easily on weekends. Furthermore, if you miss NYC, it's easy, fast, and cheap to take a bus or train. Also, your money will go much further in Philadelphia for housing. You could live in a row home for the price of a small apartment in Brooklyn.

Also, I should note that from personal observation, the job market in Philadelphia is relatively healthy, especially when considering how the country is faring. And though some of the jobs may be outside the city, a number are commutable by train, which is nice.

I've noticed some people have commented about locals, and I would have to agree. Philadelphia can be somewhat rough. Not that it's scary or anything, but there is a rough demeanor with a number of residents. However, once you've settled, the jerks can easily be ignored and you will find, as I did, that the city is home to a large number of great, friendly people.

Thumbs up Philly's Great NYC not the same as it use to be

I lived in NCY Queens when I was younger, then I moved into the city.
I moved down to Miami in 1988 and lived there till 2004. I now live in Philly and I often visit NYC and in my opion NYC isn't the same city it was back in the 60"s 70"s 80"s. Its now a vast canyon of all super wealthy no more real New Yorker's who could afford to live there unless your super rich.
That's why Philly is such a great town, it's still has a home town feel and a cosmopolitian look. The theatre's are great music scene is awesome, and of course the museums are wonderful. There is always something to do without it costing you your pay check. If you like food, I mean eating out, it has great inexpensive places. And I can't say enough about South Philly, 9th St Market and the Reading Terminal I let you find out about them on your own.
This town is a Bermunda Triangle of culture in a low key atmosphere, check it out prices for living are much better also and if you get homesick its only 90 mins away.
Great Pizza spots too just like NY, but I must admit when I get a real craving I have to go visit Bleeker St Pizza for my fix.
Good Luck.
Moe
PS There is also many fine dining resturants as well, some of the best in the country. Lots of NYer"s are moving here due to rising prices, and would you believe you can still buy a house here for $100,000. With Lots of Space!!!
