Hi guys,

I'll be passing through Philadelphia in a few days on the way to Vegas. I've got 3 hours to spare, and fancy checking out an Irish Bar, or something like that.

Is it feasable to get into town from the airport easily? Taxi? How long?

Any suggestions, re: a beer or two?

Thanks for any advice!

Jay.

On a good day a taxi ride may take 20-30 minutes but expect congestion as you approach Center City due to the current transit strike.

McGillin's
1310 Drury Lane
19107
(215) 735-5562

The oldest and the best .

Enjoy your visit.

I second McGillin's and I'll add you Fergies on Sansom St around the corner from them, however if you only have 3 hrs, you'd probably be best staying in the airport. It's a little bit of a drive and you'd probably end up with 1-1/2 hrs at the bar at best.

Yeah, i'd say to take the R1 but with only 3 hours to spare you'd be cutting it close.

A round-trip taxi will cost you $50-$60 round-trip. Provided you're going at some time that isn't rush hour you shouldn't have a problem with traffic on 95. The stretch of 95 between Old City and the airport is normally only bad when there's some big event at the sports complex.

I would stick with Old City for ease of access. If you're looking for a beer bar with good food there's National Mechanics, Beneluxx, Society Hill Hotel, Eulogy, Plough and the Stars and last but not least - Triumph Brewing - you can google any of the names here and just stick "philadelphia" after it and you'll get their websites. They're all within a block of each other.

If you wanted to head a few minutes further north (away from the airport) to Northern Liberties you get Standard Tap, Abbaye, North 3rd, Dos Segundos, El Camino Real, PYT and Swift Half. These are all within 3 blocks of each other.

If you want to stay a few minutes closer to the airport, around South St., you get the Artful Dodger, Dark Horse Tavern, The Irish Times, Pizzeria Stella (it's a bar with delicious pizza) and the incredible Brauhaus Schmitz. These are all within 2 blocks of each other except for Brauhaus which is 4 blocks away.

And closer still to the airport, in South Philly, try the South Philly Taproom, Lucky 13, the Cantina (de los caballitos) and POPE. South Philly Taproom is awesome and is the best bar you'll find that close to the airport. These are all within a 5 block stretch of Passyunk Ave.

Again, just google any of them for the exact addresses.

With the current transit strike and all the airport security delays I wouldn't do it. Three hours isn't enough time.

Seems like a lot of effort and money just for a couple beers. It would help if the transit strike wasn't stressing out the train to and from the Airport.

Personally I'd save my Irish pub fix for Nine Fine Irishmen at the NYNY casino... or maybe Hennessey's in downtown Vegas.

Guys,

Thanks very much for your suggestions, greatly appreciated! All things considered, and depending on time, I may just stick to the airport. I'm sure I can find a bar there...!

Absolutely. Depending on which terminal you're in, you can find the Jet Rock Bar & Grill, which should provide a decent vibe by airport standards.
