chestnut hill is the model for "quaint main street." most of the suggestions here are anything but "strip malls" though. fishtown's section of girard ave is coming along nicely as well.

I have lived in NE Philly for 4 years now and am a Mt. Airy transplant. I work nights in center City and take SEPTA, our transportation system, to and from work three nites a week. I am told NE Philly has quite a few areas to party. Try sites such Yelp and MenuPages to find clubs and eating establishments. NE Airport areas zip codes are 19114 and 19115. Do a search for food and entertainment and go from there. I currently live in Joshua house Apartments on Welsh rd. Look up Lindy Management. Rents usually start around $775. and up for a 1 bedroom. Use me (Shameless plug) as a reference for discount/incentives. There are quite a few apartment complexes within a stones throw of NE Airport. Septa is the problem if you are traveling by night Buses run hourly and some stop running around 8 or 9 at night. If you drive then you probably have nothing to worry about. Good luck in your move.

Thanks for the detailed information about the area around the airport! That's good news to hear that more nightlife has sprung up in NE Philly. I figured that there would be neighborhood bars but I didn't know about any clubs.

I will be commuting to Northeast Philly near the NE Airport for work and would prefer to keep the commute time to around 20 minutes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are some great neighborhoods in Philly. The problem is most of them are more than 20 minutes from NE Airport.

I would recommend Chestnut Hill, Fitler SQ, Old City, Fairmont, East Falls, Manayunk, and the Art Museum area.

I love the Northwest part of the city specifically Chestnut Hill. Chestnut Hill has old style homes, cobblestone streets, shopping, mass transit, bars, restaurants, community theater, great park and it is safe and clean. The commute is probably about 30 minutes.

Manayunk/Roxborough/East Falls are also in the NW but south of Chestnut Hill. Manayunk is where many recent college grads live and party. It is fairly safe and there are tons of bars and restaruants. The downside is all the bars, restaurants and lack of parking. Roxborough is to the west of manayunk and East Falls to the East.

If I was going to live in CC, it wouuld be either Rittenhouse, Old City, Society Hill, or Art Museum area. The problem with most of those areas is the price. I would also look into Spring Garden, Fairmont, and U City. You are still near the action but at a lower price. Those areas are still fairly safe but they are starting to get shady.

The NE is ok. Part of my family is originally from there but the area is going downhill.
