Can anyone recommend a good old-fashioned Southern Italian BYOB in South Philly? Plenty of seafood/shellfish options, homemade spicy red sauces, etc.

Pretty much all of them. Just walk down Passyunk Ave. between Dickinson and McKean. Tre Scalini, Chiarella's, Paradiso, Le Virtu, Karina's, Mr. Martino's, etc. Just don't go to Marra's (Paradiso and Le Virtu aren't BYO)

If there is a northern italian restaurant in South Philly will someone please tell me!?

FYI - a little italian lesson since people in South Philly seem to think they're more italian than thou if they drop the final vowel on most words. Words that end in "o" are masculine singular. If they end in "i" they are masculine plural. There's no need to add an "s" to ravioli, panini, biscotti or cannoli - they're already plural. The plural of gelato is gelati.

similarly, words that end in "a" are feminine singular. If they end in "e" they are feminine plural. Calzone is plural. Pizza becomes pizzeria because it's a place where you can get many pizze.

Despite what at what time was a fairly good knowledge of Italian (4 years of a decent high school program), I still find myself adding the "s" on words like pizza. In reference to dropping the vowel, I guess thats a function of our southern Italian heritage more than anything, although I will say that people who tend to flaunt their "italian-ness" (i.e. those that attach significance to the fact that they drop the final vowel) are usually the least Italian among us.

How about La Cucina Varallo on South 10th Street? Good reviews and a friend mentioned it...seems to be a hidden secret.
