Greetings. I am a Chinese student and I will come to UPENN this August. I am going to rent a room at 44th Larchwood, and take the #34 trolley to UPENN daily. Do you think this is safe?
I know that on Larchwood street, beyond 47th street is not safe. But #34 trolley is coming from that area, so is this trolley safe when it comes to the 44th Larchwood area?

You will be fine. You will not be the only Penn student taking the 34 trolley. You can also take the 42 bus if you like. On a good day you can walk or ride the bike. I also use to see Penn shuttle buses riding around at night.

During the two times I lived in University City, I took the #34 trolley everyday. I never had a problem on there and I lived as far out as 48th Street. I do think that in general on any transportation in Philly, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings after, say 10pm at night. But coming off 44th and Larchwood, you will be fine. The informal boundaries of University City are expanding ever westward. I think you will find overall pleasant surroundings and people up to 50th and even 52nd Street in some cases.
