People have the right to be consistent boosters or critics as long as they respect everyone' else's opinions. I happen to support the city proper because without a strong core, I feel that the rest of the region will suffer. (See Detroit.) But having grown up in the suburbs, I can certainly see how living outside the city would benefit many people.

By far....this Philly forum freaks me out the most. Why are people so negative on here? I am about to move to Philly and find that many of the posters have nothing but bad things to say. I just dont understand. I am a Baltimore native and though I have no experience with Philly life yet, I have visited the great city on many occasions. The same few people constantly post about crime...guess what..... most major cities have crime...you all make it sound like everyone that lives in or visits the city will eventually get stabbed, assaulted, robbed, etc. I am fairly certain that the statistics on Baltimore's crime are higher than Philly's. If people aren't involved with drugs/gangs/trouble then they should be less likely to be a victim. There will always be people that are the unfortunate victims, also. It's all part of city living.......actually it's becoming part of living anywhere....I currently live in a town of 25,000 people and I read about crime on a daily basis here.....cold, senseless crime. The only difference is that there are no good universities, art museums, theaters, restaurants, shops, etc here......so I would think that Philly has an advantage in comparison to most other places in the United States, in that respect. I am not trying to rouse feathers....I am just hoping that others like me (potential transplants) will read this and realize that Philly is a great city. Know that by living in a city you must keep your wits about you and try not to get involved in foolish things.
Many people who live in Philly and complain about it, have never left the city, even for a vacation (other than the Jersey shore). I didn't grow up in this area, but many of my friends here did. I was amazed at how people who grew up in Philly had never been to Center City or experienced any of the wonderful things this city has to offer.

This city is what you make it. Unless your income limits you to unsafe parts of the city, there are plenty of options to be in vibrant neighborhoods or close to them. I'm just amazed that one can live in center city with a car on a moderate salary.

There is a big difference between posters who will give you an honest opinion of what is good......and what to avoid, and the posters who are constantly negative about everything. I believe it was the latter group that the OP was complaining about. I will be the first to tell you where you don't want to live or even visit and those areas do exist. However walking down the street in a "safe" neighborhood, and there are plenty, should not have you in fear of your life.

Bryson662001...you are exactly right. I am all for freedom of speech and if you read my original post I did mention that I noticed only the same few people posting with such negativity. My point was...because sometimes I am not clear...that as a person that worries ALL the time about EVERYTHING....if I didn't know any better and grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere and then decided to move to a city like Philly.......I wouldn't want to after reading some of the posts on here. What city has no crime? Please inform me and I don't want statistics....I want one city....any city in this country that has never had a single act of crime. It is made to sound that Philly is the worst offender...and I am sure that all these surrounding areas get hit with heinous acts all the time.....maybe not with the volume or frequency as some places within the city...but NO PLACE is perfect. And it seems that many of these negative people don't live too far outside the city....so how does that make them any better?

That is too many 'ifs'. I live in a small town in a small burb home where if I don't lock my door it's no big deal. I'm visiting Philly this weekend with an eye toward moving.

As long as people respect each others opinions and can make up their own minds, they should be free to post how they think. This is America, we cannot launder our posts to make sure we do not scare off those who are weak minded and who are unwilling to engage in critical thinking. Do all big cities have risk? Probably do, so there's no big deal if the risk is mentioned.

I have spent hours reading the posts here on Philly and respect both the champions and the detractors. After reading it all, the visit I'm making will be made with a more educated eye, and I thank all of those who posted here so I could see through their eyes for a moment.

That is 1 "if"...IF you read correctly. I live in a small town right now also and I lock my doors because crime does happen here. You are delusional if you think otherwise. While I do feel safer here than I do in my hometown of Baltimore...it matters not where I live, because I realize that I can become a victim anywhere. And how do these forums get so off subject. I originally made an observation that there are many negative people on here and I was wondering why there is so much negativity. It seems to me that many people on here don't have much to do, myself included. The same 3 people are constantly "downing" the city but from their posts it seems they live on the outskirts....so in my opinion they are still in the Philly area.
Don't get me wrong....if people ask about safety issues it is wise to get feedback...but all I see is negative stuff. How is that helpful? And keep in mind for your future trip.....if you are renting a car make sure you lock your doors while driving around and you will be able to make a visual inspection of an area being safe or not...same thing with walking. If you find yourself in an area that makes you leery..... get out. It's as simple as that. Just by travelling through the different neighborhoods you will get a feel for safety. I lived in a home in Baltimore that was supposed to be in a very safe area and had nothing but trouble and I lived in so called bad neighborhoods there to and had no problems.
