I am a single father of one teen, moving to Philadelphia within the next few months. My son may finish high school here and join me later. I would like to know the better spots to rent an apartment or townhouse, downtown area, as I am interested in taking in all Philadelphia has to offer. I am coming from a racially polarized city in the south, and don't have a clue as to the circumstance, though sure its not the same, in Philly. Any advice as to rentals, places to hang, and where to meet new people is greatly appreciated.

www.4wallsinphilly.com has descriptions of all the Center City (downtown) neighborhoods along with some rental apartment listings. www.apartmentguide.com may also be helpful. You would also be smart to take the time to read all the many posts here that ask the same questions you did. It is a wealth of information.
