Hello-
I am looking to find a short term rent (2 months) near the Roberts Proton Therapy Center (3400 Civic Blvd). My 2 year old daughter had a brain tumor removed and she needs to receive radiation treatment in Philadelphia. We will be relocating from Ohio for the two months. There will be three adults and one child, so we are looking for at least one bedroom, preferably 2. Since it will be more than just a few weeks, we really don't want to stay in a hotel, and need to have a small kitchen.

Just wondering if anyone can advise us on where to start looking and in what neighborhoods We need something that is safe and also not too expensive. I am not sure if it would be better to try to find something close to the hospital, or look further away and commute every morning. How bad is the traffic if we were to commute to this area every morning?

Thanks-

I believe there are several extended stay hotels near the airport. That would surely be cheaper than a typical hotel. It would be maybe a 20 minute commute to the therapy center.

3400 Civic? I think that is the new CHOP buildting at the old Civic Center. The traffic around there is pretty bad. The South St Bridge is under construction and their is also construction at Penn. The good news is the train and the subway both stop within a couple blocks of CHOP.

I would check with Penn and maybe they could point you toward an empty off campus student apt.

Isn't there a Ronald McDonnald house there? I have been traveling from Center City to the Pearlman Center @ HUP 5 or 6 times in the last two months and rush hour traffic is bad coming and going because that area is a huge employment center but it's only about one square mile around the hospitals so it dissapates quickly.

You should contact Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania Hospital and tell them your situation. They will be able to guide you.

Good luck.

Duh! I totally forgot about the Ronald McDonald House. And yes I agree that the hospital should be experienced in leading you in the right direction.

Yep, the 39th and Chestnut Street location would be about a ten minute drive.

Thanks for your suggestions. A social worker from the hospital is looking into the Ronald McDonald house for us. This will work for the short term if we can get a room. If we end up staying in an extended stay by the airport, how long of a commute would we expect?

From the airport to the hospitals is anywhere from 10 minutes to a max of one half hour depending on traffic. Also there are several shortcuts to avoid traffic. In distance it's about 7 miles.
