Buy one of the SEPTA city system maps at SEPTA headquarters on 1234 Market Street. The current version is $10 but you may be able to get a slightly outdated version (2006 edition) for $1.

Just check out the SEPTA | Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority map schedules to see where you want to go as SoLibs gave you some links already. That's the best way to figure out the public transit system in Philly.
