Hi, just had a couple questions I was hoping to get help with. First, I will be working at an elementary school in west Philly (56th and Christian) starting in August, any input on the neighborhood, is it safe? If I chose to live in Old City area, how is the commute, a lot of traffic? Thanks for your help!

You'll be working in one of the more challenged parts of the city. If you have experience in less-than-ideal urban neighborhoods, it will be a moderate adjustment at most. If not, it will be a culture shock.

If you choose to live in Old City, I'd actually recommend taking public transportation; specifically take the Blue Line Train (aka the "El") to 13th St, walk downstairs and transfer to the #34 light rail trolley, get off at 56th and Baltimore and walk a couple blocks north to the school.

It's expensive to keep a car in Philly; insurance is high and parking in popular areas like Old City is limited and costly. Services like ZipCar and PhillyCarShare are available for occasional auto use. If you find that keeping a car is still a priority, then you may face traffic through downtown until you cross over the Schuykill (SCHOOL-kill) River. It shouldn't be too bad after that.

Thanks for the help...believe me I know what I am getting into, but keeping open minded, I do have some experience with this type of school. Main part is safety, knowing I can drive in and out without worry.

I would imagine, although I'm not certain, that the school would provide dedicated faculty parking. But again, unless you're anticipating an unwieldy amount of papers to take home, consider the high expense of keeping a car in the city vs. a relatively convenient transit commute. And if you can afford Old City rent, you may as well consider University for a shorter trip and more bang for your buck with decent social options.

Carroll Park is the area which is mostly west of 51st Street to about 62nd; North of Market to just below Haverford Avenue+/-. It would be south of what is typically called Overbrook/Overbrook Park. If you haven't reasearched these areas you would be amazed at how much renovating is going on. Can you believe a rehabbed 4 BR twin selling for the $150's in the block which reaches up to Market and the El? Investors are ripping through this area grabbing anything that they can get. It is a little bit like what happened in S/W Philly a few years ago during the expansion period of Lindbergh Blvd, the new postal facility, etc. Do you remember reading about Center City SouthWest?

That is interesting, I wasn't aware of that. I recall that there was some major renovations happening on South 52nd St. towards SW Philly just before the recession hit. Are you mentioning this to say that the neighborhood where the OP will be working may be more on the upswing?

Default Same School

Hi, I'll be teaching at the same school! My husband and I are moving to Philly from Brooklyn and are also looking for a place within easy commute of the school. We're heading to Philly to check out neighborhoods on Monday and Tuesday, so I'll post here what we find out. I'm going to be relying on public transit, so from my research, anything along the Market/Frankfort line or along the 34? Trolley line seems to work. Good luck!
