Please don't steer this into a religious debate.

more importantly, it doesn't "PHYSICALLY" make anything happen either. Superstition and snake oil, a bad combination, add a dash of gullibility and almost anything can happen, but....probably not what you were hoping for.

You guys ever hear the saying, "Even a fake smile can brighten someones day?
The power of positive thought is real. Scientifically proven even. It is called the placebo effect. Even if that is all The Secret is, it has been scientifically proven to work. Yes it does leave out the part where you actually have to make this stuff happen and that simply thinking about a new car isn't going to magically make it appear in your driveway.

That is why I said "metaphysically" in my post. I am very familiar with psychoneuroimmunology, how one's mental state (which is a product of your neural states) can stimulate or supress the body's natural healing processes (one's immune system).

And, your positive thoughts can affect your motivation to act and accomplish your goals. And yes, your physical behaviors (including fake smiles) can be observed through the eyes and neurons of your neighbor and socially affect them.

But, there is no "Secret" to this. The selling point of the Secret is the powerful and false idea that one can make things happen through your thoughts directly with no intermediary physical action by you. That is absolutely false. Neural activity can make things happen physically, but it follows the well-known and understood laws of physics. I can make a functional MRI do things using my thoughts alone because thoughts are nothing more than neural activity and neural activity encourages blood flow and the fMRI can detect through magnets small fluctuations in magnetic fields. All of that is using the laws of physics. But, one's thoughts or prayers or meditations are not going to bring you a million dollars, unless one first turns those thoughts into actions.

Again, I recognize that one's thinking can inhibit or enhance one's ability to perform. But, I wholly reject the notion in the way the Secret uses it that positive thinking can make things happen for which there is no physical mechanism for making it happen. Once you leave physical cause and effect, one enters the realm of the metaphysical, and there is no evidence the metaphysical exists, and every time we have scientifically looked for the metaphysical we have discovered nothing but empty claims, and that is a fact. Scientists have tested supposed practitioners of ESP, of divining rods, levitation, etc, and every time no person can support their claims and have a ton of excuses about why they couldn't do it.

Actually, all these third world coutries out there that are starving or being oppressed. It is happening because the people allow it to be that way. The only reason Countries like America, Japan, England and other top Countries are on the top is because we make things happen. We Know that you need to take control of your life and think positive. Do you think that the founders of The USA had hope? Do you think they thought positive? You bet they did. Even though they faced terrible odds and certain death if they failed. The believed they would come out victorious.

Put two men in a room and have them fight to the death. These men are equally skilled and have no weapons other than their own two hands. One man goes it positive that he will win, the other is certain he will lose. Which one do you think would make it out alive?

That part about faking smiles really is true to a point. Psychologists have found it really does lift peoples' moods to a small, but measurable degree.

The key is to not take anything to extremes. "The Secret" takes positive thinking to an extreme. But your post takes things to the opposite extreme by saying or implying it doesn't work or has no effect. That isn't true, either.

It's a balance between the two. Why must so many people think only in terms of black/white????
