everything happening for a reason , universe knowing what its doing
that sounds like luck to me , anything ( good or bad ) which befalls someone and is unearned = luck
it sort of iritates me when i hear people saying , you make your own luck , by definition if you made your own luck , it wouldnt be luck , merley good descision making
choosing to invest in real estate in the tenth year of a property boom and getting broke is not bad luck
driving home from football practice and getting hit by a drunk driver who happened to be coming along is bad luck
riding a motorycycle without a helmet and ending up with brain damage is not bad luck
starting your first job and having mr burns as your boss is bad luck
drinking a bottle of whiskey every day for three years and getting liver disease is not bad luck
having your drink spiked and having an averse reaction while out on a night is bad luck

"Chance favors the prepared mind."
"Trust in god, but tie up your camel first."
I think we as people have a tendency to see what we expect to see, to go past that which we don't expect, and to draw lines between events to try and make some sense of them. Therefore, we'll notice someone's apparent good luck if we expect them to have it and will connect the dots that support our ideas.
I don't believe things happen for a reason, good or bad, but that if you end up with lemons, you can make some lemonade. That's not why you got lemons, but you can try to make something good out of a situation.

The term 'Luck' seems to cause confusion because it can mean two things - (a) factors we can control and random factors which we can't control which sometimes mess up our plans - or make things come out well (man proposes and god disposes as the saying has it)
(b) some force like fate which we could control if we only knew how. Some people seem to have this 'Fate, Luck or destiny' on their side (Napoleon, Nelson and Hitler all believed in this semi- godlike fate-destiny but it let them down in the end, it seems)
I think that it is a superstition and we delude ourselves into thinking that there is some pattern or power that is deliberately intervening in our lives (random factors do, but not intentionally). This gives a rich area of delusion, superstition and exploitation by those who profess to be able to help us control our fate or destiny with astrology, prognostications or tea -leaves. I regard these people as either deluded or charlatans.
Like those who claim to predict the future through religion or alien contact, one day I trust they will be subject to heavy fines if their predictions do not pan out.

You make an excellent point about decision making and poor judgment but, what does that have to do with luck?
