Many years ago, I hypothesized something quite similar, and summed up very concisely. Perhaps Life, like Gravity, is a universal constant, manifest only when certain conditions are met. Just as Gravity is manifest only in the presence of objects with mass, life is manifest only in the presence of certain chemical juxtapositions. Hence, when certain chemical combinations occur, Life MUST be present.

For some reason, the idea that life 'must have arisen' sort of for some reason pointed to 'intelligent design' in my mind. I'm not sure if this logic is sound but it feels intuitive.

Eckhart Tolle: "The opposite of life is not death. The opposite of death is birth. Life has no opposite."

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll make it a point to not read anything else by him.

Obviously, Life has an opposite: The absence of life. In most contexts, the word Death suffices to cover the absence of life. In some cases, of course they are not antonyms. One would not say "there is death on the moon". But Life still has an opposite.

Death and Birth cannot be opposites, because opposites, semantically, must describe mutually accessible states, which can be applicable to the same event at the same time. Big or small, light or dark. Death and Birth cannot be, because everything is either alive or lifeless, and only the lifeless can achieve birth, and only the alive can achieve death, so they are never a "choice" that something can be one or the other of, which excludes the semantic concept of antonymity.

So is a fetus lifeless? Or is it achieving death?

You are playing the Eckhart Tolle game of playing with words. "Birth" has different meanings in different contexts, and you and Eckhart can't just indiscriminately throw them back and forth as if they always had a fixed, discrete, sharp-edged definition. The "birth" of an idea or a star is not necessarily analogous to the birth of a platypus.

My purpose for ridiculing the introduction of Tolle into the discussion, us because motivational speakers rarely have anything to say that has factual relevance to a discussion, since their goal it not to empirically define reality, but to obfuscate it in order to influence human behavior.

I have found that truth can come out of the mouths of the obscure and the popular. Public recognition level is irrelevant. 'Motivational speakers' used to be called orators and before that preachers and before that prophets. And those who couldn't speak, wrote.
They all tried to "influence human behavior." If not, what's the point?
