He spent the majority of his life raised by his grandparents, if I'm not mistaken. Didn't his mother ditch him to remarry and move to another country?

No. He lived in Indonesia with his mother and her 2nd husband for several years before returning to Hawaii during her time in graduate school. He elected to live with his grandparents during high school, preferring not to accompany his mother to Indonesia where she undertook anthropology field work.

By all accounts he was very close to his mother and she to him. And she did a good job of raising him. The biological father was virtually not in his life. To the point of this post it can be argued that his stepfather WAS involved in his life, at least in his formative childhood years, though offhand I do not know to what degree.

hmm good question.

But leave "plilosophical" out of it. This topic is "real life", not "How I wish things were."

I think kids need love, safety, and consistency. If children get these "normal" things then they will also be given education, tought how to keep clam, and good teeth. I don't think it matters how they get these things. If a child is given these things they will have a good chance in life.

What we need to keep in mind is "love" is not a "mushy love", its engineered to match the "unit" being raised.
