One is trust.
I need to trust you before I'll allow you in and just running into a stranger or casual acquaintance isn't going to cut it. There are exceptions and one is when two people meet and seem to forge an instant bond.
The advantage to communicating online is you can totally ignore someone who has impressed you in a negative manner and they will never know it. In person, which is what you are complaining about, it may be pretty obvious.
Perhaps, all other things being equal, you just don't come across as personable.
Do you really want to talk with others or talk to them?
My first instinct, gathered from your op, is that I'd probably be inclined to avoid you.
Is it too difficult to grasp that one may not be as candid and blunt in person as they're on an anonymous Internet forum? Hmm... he said some people are stupid in his OP. Hmm.. that must mean he calls people stupid when he talks to them in real life. Hmm.. Yes, it definitely means that. Hmm..

If one is so afraid that other will find out about the real self, what does that say about his real self? Let's take an extreme example. Some rockstar. When asked about philosophical stuff - they give their view. They don't care if people like it or not. Many are open about the vulnerabilities and struggles. So this is a luxury that only rockstars can afford? I don't think so. I think opening might be a matter of just a little courage and being comfortable with who you really are. If you don't seek validation you can't be judged. They don't have jurisdiction over you

It's not only views.

Would you want people you work with to know your personal vulnerabilities so they can knife you (figuratively) in office politics?

1. Fear of social discomfort. They may be afraid of being rude or of fighting with you when they disagree.

2. Fear of being exposed for their lack of knowledge.

3. Fear of being challenged. Sometimes it's not fun to find out something you believe is not based on any logical premise.

Op, I have bemoaned the same thing for many years. One reason college was so much fun is that there were so many people to have debates and general mental masturbation with you. But it is cool to have a forum like this to go to.

Tell me if I've got it right, because I'll bet you're classic textbook...

Your probably a liberal Democrat, along with your spouse. At least one of you is probably working or has worked for a city, county, state or the Federal government. You're atheist, or at the very least Agnostic or if you do belong to an organized religion it's probably the Unitarians. Your erudite attitude towards other people is obvious as you qualify humans beings as to education rather than their morality. Speaking of morality, you are probably always vomiting out a diatribe about "racist, homophobic conservatives" but you yourself more than likely live in an area where the population is better than 95% white.

So - how close did I come?

The problem with you Larry Caldwell, is that although you consider yourself open-minded, you are actually a narrow-minded, hypocritical big ol' bag of wind.

Well, here is an oxymoron if I have ever witnessed one.

I wonder if the local gourmet club offers cooking classes with boxed mac-n-cheese?

You got the atheist part right. If there's any place left in the USA that is 95% white I'm not aware of it.

If you think you are more moral because your mind is filled with superstitious nonsense, you are welcome to it. I'm quite aware that many people are so defective they require a religion to tell them right from wrong.

BTW, that's not philosophy, and it's not very bright.

Nothing against them. But they've been imitating this year's New York Knicks for 47 years.
