Phoenix area is great. I've lived in a lot of different cities (San Diego, L.A. basin, San Fran, Seattle, Dallas, Houston, Tucson and others) and Phoenix is my favorite. It's not for everyone (which city is?), but, for me, it's great. Arizona is a great state, too.

I had a long response, but I got called in early off my break, so I couldn't post it.
Regarding property taxes, Arizona is lower than Texas, but we have state income tax and Texas doesn't. It's more-or-less a wash.
Regarding crime, Phoenix has a lower crime rate than Dallas and a similar one to Ft. Worth. I had a bunch of statistics, if you're interested, a quick Google search will find what you need. Also, many of the suburbs here have very low crime rates (Gilbert and Surprise especially, but most of the others are not far behind). I'm sure it's the same way with Dallas suburbs.
Regarding traffic, Dallas is worse. Phoenix has the 16th worst traffic. Dallas... it depends on what criteria is used, I saw anywhere from 6th to 18th worst in different studies (which is a huge +/-, I think some studies include Ft. Worth and some don't). From my experience, Dallas should rank in the 8th-10th range for worst traffic, but that is my opinion. In any event, both Dallas and Phoenix are large metro areas and have traffic congestion M-F in the mornings and afternoons.
Also, what about Dallas do you dislike? You'd hate to move here only to find that whatever you disliked in Dallas is also here.

Phoenix is a good place to be from in my opinion, as a generational native who has had a front row seat to the many changes over the years. I would not consider relocating here unless I had a career opportunity I could not get anywhere else or I had so much money it didn't matter. I think the snowbirds have the right idea. Come in for our beautiful winters and leave for the hot hot summers. I am sorta familiar with Dallas too. I think Dallas offers more to do, but u have to get on the freeway to everywhere. I don't enjoy that so much. Good luck in your choice and if u choose to move to Phoenix Welcome.
