Fairly short -- probably no more than 20 minutes. I'd use 24th St., 16th St., or 7th St. for the drive.

If your gonna do any commuting along the Baseline Rd area of Phoenix, I would suggest you get an anti-armor tank and keep the lid tight.

Oh good grief yourself. Don't you as the moderatoer read the 100's posts that have been written recently about this area and how it's the worst area of the Phoenix Metro area. Ever read about the Baseline Killer and others as well. Ever read about all the shootings nearly everyday in this area. Come on now. You can't be that naive.

few more questions
What is the zip code of this area, and is it really unsafe to live around there?

The zip code for Baseline on the east side of Phoenix is 85042.
As for safety, as you can see above, there are differing opinions. Personally, I think that the area is steadily improving and the perception of crime is much worse than the reality. Of course, some would say I'm naive for believing that.
In any case, you can use the AZ Central crime reports to make up your own mind:
Arizona Crime Search - Crime In Arizona - Phoenix Crime Search - azcentral.com (broken link)
No matter where you end up living, I would advise installing an alarm system and paying for monthly monitoring service. Property crime does not respect zip code boundaries and can occur even in areas with pristine reputations. My alarm system once made the difference between a clumsy attempted burglary with minor property damage and a successful burglary with major property loss.
