I'm not sure why the only houses that interest you are in the Turf Paradise area, unless that's where you want to spend your time while you are here. It's not the part of town I would pick to have a house that would stand vacant most of the year. Not many (any?) gated townhome communities, etc. in that immediate area. (I'm not sure of the boundaries of the area you are actually looking in)
^^^I agree here. Have you visited this area of town? 19th Avenue and Bell Road/Greenway is not the best area especially if your property is going to sit vacant for a period of time. Lots of payday loan places line the streets along with car dealerships. There is a newer Wal-Mart there with some run-down looking restaurants.

I am a DINK but I am a renter and like NE Phoenix near Desert Ridge. Lots of shopping, dining, and hiking opportunities. If I had the funds (and the credit) to buy my own place, I'd consider something along the Central corridor or the Arcadia area. Or one of my favorite areas in town is around 7th Avenue & Missouri. Another one of my favorite areas is around SR51 and 32nd Street near the preserve.

I also second the recommendation to check into a gated community or at least a community where you can trust your neighbors to keep an eye on things.
