Ok, I lived in Laveen when it was just starting to grow. Positives are that it is close to downtown and there are some really nice communities there. It is also one of the more diverse communities in the valley. Having said that, though, we found crime to be a big issue. We witnessed a shooting on the street directly behind where we lived, burglaries were common, cars were stolen or left on blocks and the traffic can be difficult. My wife and I are looking to possibly relocate to Surprise because we love how it is developing. Are there some "shady" areas? Probably, but the nicer areas definitely outweigh the not-so-nice areas. Wherever you move, though, I'm sure you'll enjoy the valley. It's a great place to live, in spite of the current economic situation. Good luck.

Wow, blast from the past post!

We chose Laveen. My husband is a now a police officer in the area, and we have a beautiful house. We have had no problems and crime in Laveen isn't any worse than when we lived in L.A. (I actually feel safer in Laveen than I did L.A.). So we're happy and I personally love Arizona!

If your two choices are only between Laveen and Surprise, then I would seriously choose Laveen. Surprise is a nice area, but it is way too far from everything. We have relatives who live in Surprise and it is a drag to drive out that far. It is just to far to drive on a regular basis. Laveen is more centrally located and it is not so far from the airport just in case you decide Arizona is not for you. Happing hunting...

I live near Surprise, so it is not too far for me at all!

Doesn't it really depend on where you work? I work in Deer Valley. No way I'd want to live in Laveen.

It is fun to re read old posts. Also nice to see the outcome of an individuals decision. Glad to hear you are doing well in Laveen. From our point of view we find the Phoenix area very nice to be a part of although our time is so short in the area as I still work in California. As long as my old employer is willing to give me more money to stay I am obligated. Sure would love to be working in the area though. Funny thing is that for us we bought because California wasn't affordable. Now our former community is very affordable. What a difference a year makes. SO good to hear that you are doing well though.
