YOUR contention was that a home loses value when you install a pool, period. That is a priori false, because it obviously depends on the property and the pool. That was my point and it still stands. Lastly, this is a BLOG which is opinion, and not a study of any sort.

If money is absolutely no object, and you've paid your dentist and vet bills, and your kids' tuition, and your health insurance, then go for it. The only place to be on a hot, hot Phoenix day--if you are actually stuck in Phoenix for the Summer. Don't expect to add any value to your property by putting in a pool. There are businesses in Phoenix that specialize in converting unused pools to decks, because digging them up costs about the same amount--7000 USD.
Apparently you misunderstood the OP. The question wasn't about the pros & cons of getting a pool. It was about the pros and cons of having a waterfeature in a pool.

Our pool has a rockspill from the spa into the pool, and then a waterfall over the pool's negative edge into a collecting trough.
We had a pool back in OH that had nothing like this, and we find the features add some charm and elegance to the pool. It is true that there is more crap being washed into the pool from the rocks... but, that's what chemicals are for. If you don't think bird droppings and bug junk is getting in your pool anyways, you're fooling yourself.

Thank you for all the replies. I truley wanted opinions on whether or not to put in a water feature because my husband thinks they are not worth adding on to a pool- just wanting to if people had problems with the motors burning out or any other issues.

It is not a question of to put in a pool or not- we are doing that. I know we will not redeem all the cost in terms of added value to the house. But it will add value to our lives, and the use we will get out of it is worth that to us.

Our pool has 3 pumps. While I don't take care of the pool myself, I believe one is for the negative edge, one for the spa and one for the pool.

The water running to the water feature would be from the regular pool pump, and we just turn a valve to divert water to the feature, or away from it.

Our pool is 10 years old and we've replaced the pool pump once.

Interesting, we have 3 pumps as well: a main filter pump, a pump for the water features, and a pump for the spa jets. Oh, that's another thing. Are you getting, a spa? That's the best feature of our pool. We use it all year round.

just wanted some opinions from people that have a water feature built in with their pool.

My husband and I are looking to put a pool in our house within the next year- I want a raised wall with a spilling over water feature at the back of the pool. He wants no feature at all.

So for those of you that have features- do you enjoy it? Do you have any problems with it at all? If you had to do it over- would you still put a feature in if you were building a new pool?
no i wouldn't because it could mess something up and then u would have to start all over

If you are going to stay put for a while, then go whole hog on the upgrades. It is hard to overdo a backyard here. Just don't expect to get your investment back. Do it cuz you like it.
