I will be in Phoenix this month for Christmas and will be staying with different family members. I want to do some runs while I'm home and get really sick of breathing in fuel and having stop at every light on main roads. I will be up in North Scottsdale for a little while and will have access to the Scottsdale Greenbelt. Will also be in N. Phoenix and Gilbert. I will not be near the Arizona Canal. Anyone know of any other running trails they recommend? I've done a little reading and runningplanet.com recommends Reach 11 Recreational Area. Has anyone on here run on this and what sort of info do you have on it? Any other areas? My runs are typically 5-10 miles right now. I may need to go out by myself so I want to make sure it's safe. Thanks everyone!

Reach 11 is a nature preserve with trails for runners (also hikers, mountaim bikers, horses), I run or hike it a lot and it's very safe, there are other people around but it's not crowded and the trails are very wide. There's a pond with some tree cover in the center and you might see some wildlife - there are some coyotes, burrowing owls, hawks, etc. (the coyotes won't bother you). It's closed from sunset to sunrise.

If you like trail running in the north Scottsdale area, you may also like the McDowell Sonoran Mountain Preserve. There are a lot of trails, with varying degrees of elevation increase, with nice views of the city. The trails are longer but portions are a little rocky. Some can get a little congested at peak hours Here's a link, and you can print out pdf maps:
