I know the haters will protest but there is some good news in AZ these days, from azcentral/Arizona Republic.

The highlights

-Innovations Technology Incubator in a state-of-the-art facility near Chandler Boulevard and McClintock Drive.
The incubator positions Chandler to grow its own businesses in biotechnology, bioinformatics, software design, nanotechnology and medical devices.

-Continuum, a 153-acre master-planned science and technology park that will occupy the former Motorola site on Price Road.

-A Cleveland-based wholesaler opened Sweeties Candy of Arizona at Chandler Boulevard and Alma School Road. It is its first expansion outside of Ohio.

-Local Motors moved its headquarters from Massachusetts to Chandler and opened a factory. It designs and builds vehicles through crowd sourcing. Online-auction company eBay signed a 10-year lease for Chandler Echelon I on Price Road for an expansion of its PayPal division.

-A new food market owned by Colorado-based Hill Grocery Co. opened as an anchor at the Promenade at Fulton Ranch

-Chicago-based CDW announced it was hiring 70 sales people, and Pittsburgh-based Education Management Corp., a provider of online classes, said it was adding employees in Chandler

I have to check out that Hill market sometime. That's all good news, and they missed several other things, such as the Intel expansion and all the new jobs that just filled the speculative offices on the North side of the Chandler Airpark (although CDW is part of that).

In addition to Chandler, there is a lot going on in Gilbert and Mesa that will help all of the east valley as well as Phoenix.

In Gilbert there is the MD Anderson cancer center opening next year.

New cancer center hits 'high point' in Gilbert

In Mesa there is the huge convention center and planned community planned for the General Motors Proving grounds

The MD Anderson Cancer Center is huge and will attract people not only in state but from the neighboring states in the southwest. Arizona has needed one for a long time. Anyway, you should make this it's own thread. Mesa and Gilbert residents deserve to hear this good news and its worthy of its own thread.

Unfortunatey, citydata provides a very skewed impression of Arizona since it's filled with people who come here to vent but there are a lot of positive developments in Arizona that often get overlooked. There are articles like this all the time but unfortunately, the only ones that get published on the Arizona related city data forums are negative threads.

Some of the negativity might stem from all the bad publicity Arizona has received in the past year. Look at how the national media and certain special interest groups hooked onto the SB 1070 controversy, and immediately concluded that the state is full of racists and bigots. Also, people tend to hear rumors about Arizona being nothing but a vast desert wasteland full of scary critters ... hence, all the threads about snakes & scorpions.

I really appreciate threads like these which enhance the positive things that are going on ... especially companies that are moving here. I've said repeatedly that Phoenix needs to be a place where people come for competitive jobs and to better themselves. The seemingly endless promotion of sunny weather and retirement as reasons to move here should really be a thing of the past.

This is great! Ever since we decided to move there in June I can't believe how many people are moving to Arizona to run their business. Just think of all the negotiations going on now and the good news to come. Exciting!

I don't know if AZ has begun to make strong efforts to attract business here through tax incentives or not. But we have the climate that will attract employees, and currently have affordable housing. So hopefully they are making more efforts.

I think tax incentives are ultimately going to happen with the Republicans slowly but surely taking over the state. We've already seen massive spending cuts which has been controversial. However, with that will also come tax incentives for businesses. And that will result in more companies moving here. Commercial property is also cheap right now and it's luring a lot of companies here at the moment.
