It depends on what attractions you want to see. Obviously if you want to see the outdoor beauty like Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona, etc., you'll need a car. Otherwise don't waste your money. The airport is connected to the light-rail, there are many nice hotels on the line downtown, midtown and in Tempe, and as stated before, many of the museums are right off the line.

Maybe if you do want to go somewhere off the line like to see the Frank Lloyd Wright house you could just take a taxi to and from. It will save you a lot of money.

For what a cab ride to and from Taliesin from downtown would cost, you could rent a car for a day, especially from an off airport site, and see more than just that.

That reminds me. If you DO rent a car, for all or part of your stay, get it from an off airport location, saves some of the crazy fees.

I live in Queens and often visit my brother who lives in Tempe..I've never rented a car

I use a combination of Walking + LightRail + Orbit (free) + Buses to get around.

However, your not going to see a lot of other people walking around, except on Mill Ave (Tempe).

You can check the walkabiltiy of a particular neighbor with walkscore.com

That works, if you are staying within Tempe and the path of the Light Rail. If you want to go to Scottsdale or Paradise Valley or the northwest side, it doesn't work.
