I would bet money that every city in the country has roaches somewhere. They're part of our ecosystem and flourish in many climates. Having said that, in the 6 months we've lived here, we've seen more scorpions (3) than roaches (0).

ymmv. welcome to AZ.

They don't seem to have them way up in the frozen tundra where I grew up. Maybe not in parts of MN either. But, hey, it's pick your poison - roaches (that are easily controlled with bug treatments) or bitter cold, dreary winters that you can't do a thing about? It is encouraging that the things that people come up with as negatives for this area are so trivial. Roaches? LOL.

I honestly am starting to think the people who lived here before must have been pigs. I mean, when I moved in here in was still early 80s decorating. I liked a few features and could see the potential so I jumped on it. The first year I hired a pest service. The second year I can't remember. I think the third year I had a lot of greenery taken down and maybe had to call a pest service twice. Since then, it's been ok. I can deal with the occasional roach or two, but then I have a cat. And since cats are immune to scorpions (and I highly doubt they are in this part of town), I have never seen one.

Anyway, getting back on topic. Scottsdale can be nice, as can other areas. I would think living in the Encanto area would be nice as well, although crime would be higher. I love the older homes there and Encanto park. Everything is a trade-off. With the right alarm system and right dog and right gun, I'm sure all would be well over there.

It may seem trivial, but when you find them in your silverware, it's not trivial. Granted, it's not that way here, but it is that way in other parts of the country. Oh, and I lived in the bitter dreary tundra but when your neighbors won't allow spraying of pesticides, you are kind of stuck with them. Yes, even in the tundra.

The topic of roaches is already underway in this thread --> Help! Sewer roaches in my new dishwasher . Please take the roach conversation to that thread. Thanks.

I would start with the Arrowhead area of Glendale and also look at northwest Peoria. Depending on where work is in Glendale, some other options are Surprise, Anthem, Goodyear, Avondale (north of the I-10), and I'm sure other places.
A commute from Scottsdale to Glendale might get old. Plus, the other places I mentioned are closer to Nevada....

The best advice I could give is to make sure you have a job lined up previously, and make sure the job is a good one first. Too many people make quick decisions, and it's best to "ease" into things to get a real taste on the ground.

I'm not meaning to offend any, but working in a call center would be a bad fit and not a long term job for most people.

While making sure employment is secured first is good advice, it sounds like the OP has a job lined up already in Glendale.

PhoenixAirConcerns, in the future, please read the posts before offering your input. Otherwise, your posts are off topic and irrelevant.

sure, Scotts. is a very nice place, desirable, popular with tourists and golfers, pretty, clean, upscale (if you want that scene), the whole bit.....

if he's working in Glendale, though, it could be easier, cheaper, less-stressful, etc. to live over there.....there are many great areas nowadays over there and there's less pretension and phoniness.....not that Scotts. is a sea of snobbery, but there is that element in some areas of town....you'll need to decide what is important to you....
