Damn Good Steak Restuarant Recommendation
For my husband's 30th birthday, he wants to have dinner at a good steak place. We haven't lived here very long so any recommendation would be appreciated! I'd like to stay in west Phoenix but I know I know, all the good places are in Scottsdale so we're definitely willing to make a trek to the east side of town!
Money's not a big deal as long as it's damn good steak! I know he'd probably like a Brasilian steakhouse if there is one around town. Traditional, good ol' fashion slab of sirloin will do, too! Local places are best. Chains are undesirable. Thanks guys!

There's no need to go all the way to Scottsdale. Here are two possibilities in Central Phoenix:
Durant's -- Not only a great steak restaurant, but also a piece of Phoenix history. It has been in business for over 50 years at the same location in Midtown -- Central Avenue just south of Thomas. The best way to get there is via Third St and then west on Virginia. That route avoids light rail contruction and delivers you to the valet stand behind the restaurant.
Durant’s
Donovan's -- On Camelback in the Biltmore Area. I've never been there, but some folks I know say it's the best steak in town. It may also be the most expensive.

T-Bone
There is a steakhouse called The T-Bone at the foot of South Mountain. You take Central all the way to Baseline, turn right(W) got to 19th Ave. turn left and go up the hill and it is on your left. They cook over mesquite outside, you can sit inside or out, and you have a view of the whole valley. It isn't anything fancy....sawdust floors...but the steaks are good. This place has been around for many, many years...the road used to be dirt, but is paved now.

I have heard of a Brasilian steakhouse. Some friends went there and raved about it! Now if I could just remember the name and where it's at.

I have to agree that even with the prices, Ruth's Chris Steak House is about the best you can get if you're looking for good steak at any cost. There's one in Scottsdale across from the RailRoad Park (Scottsdale Rd and Indian Bend, just a couple of miles North of Scottsdale Fashion Square).
There's a Brazilian steak house a couple of miles further North on Scottsdale Rd (just South of Shea) called Rio.

I visited Durant's recently, and I don't recommend it for the steak. The atmosphere was nice, a bit of an older crowd. Service was very good. For the price, my steak was not all that good. My wife had some unbelievable pork lin chops that were cheaper and much better than the steak.
It was nice to be at a local establishment and not some boring chain place. However, Ruth's Chris is not a boring chain. I think there's a Morton's here as well.
