The mountains are always free. Admittedly, it's a bit hot for serious hiking right now, but you could enter South Mountain Park from Central Avenue and drive up to Dobbins Lookout.

Some museums have a free night one day per week. For the Phoenix Art Museum, it's Tuesday; for the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, it's Thursday.

There are also nights when numerous art galleries stay open late simultaneously, drawing a crowd. In Downtown Phoenix, it's the first Friday of each month. In Scottsdale, it's every Thursday.

One really fun but really wierd touristy thing to do is go to the Magic Castle. It is by South mountain off 7th Street, I think. Just google Magic Castle Phoenix. It's $5 per person...not quite sure if it is worth $5...but it is something to do that your group will talk and laugh about in the future. May be a bit hot...and you have to call before you go.

Sedona is a bit of a drive, but it's cooler up there once you arrive and very beautiful. It would be a good day trip.

If your group is only adults you could go to a casino....at least it's cool.

If there are teenagers/kids you could go to Jillians at Desert Ridge Marketplace. Kids/teens love this upscale arcade...bowling alley, food, shopping.

The mall at Camelback & Scottsdale is fun for those that like to shop...there are some pretty fun restaurants in the area.

There are companies that do jeep tours. I've been on one, and it was a lot of fun for the kids and adults. Just google jeep tours phoenix.

You could tube down the Salt River. It is FUN! Will be very hot and you'd need alot of sunscreen. This would be an all day adventure that would take some planning.

Oh, and think about taking them to a Ranch Market. The one on Roosevelt in South Central Phx is a good one. It's a huge hispanic market with a fantastic food court. The food is cheap and wonderful...if you don't speak Spanish it will be a challenge ordering, but that is part of the fun and the people that work there are very nice.

Hope you all have a nice visit.

During the summer we like to do things outdoors at night when it's a full moon, like hiking at Squaw Peak. I think the next full moon is July 30th.

My relatives were impressed with Phoenix Botanical Garden (http://www.desertbotanical.org/). This time of the year might be a bit too hot to visit... but there are plenty of shades available.... just bring lots of water.

My father-in-law (from Atlanta) always enjoys going to "Open House" in upscale areas.

Shopping is what most people do here. I take the kids to a water based theme park. Big Surf on McClintock, or Sun Splash. Kids like it. Point South Mountain, it's a resort with a great water park, nice eateries, and parents like it too! Anything else is usually to far for me to get away. The whole valley pretty much looks the same, except maybe a few spots but still to much the same to drive all over. We have the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Sedona red rocks, but you probably know that already. Those are it though and they are 2 to 5 hours from PHX> Hope that helped a little.
