I'm guessing these are gonna be luxury condos right? Probably out of my price range anyways, I could dream.

Yea...seems that's all developers imagine to build, I don't really get it...but I guess to their defense, it is very pricey to build high rise condos.
There are also supposed to be some market rate apartments in the mix though, so that could be appealing to some.

for the love of god, please have desert trees. I will never be able to afford the new Manhattan of Phoenix, but i would like to see downtown forming some green.

The tower, that was to be a new tallest at 44 stories, now looks to only be about 36 floors. They made the hotel floors less by doing a bigger footprint...so wider vs taller, which means less floors...I guess it's cheaper to build that way?

Well, I said in November of last year (on this very same thread) that the project would probably be scaled back:

And why wouldn't it be scaled back? Just about everything in Phoenix that is proposed regarding more height eventually faces setbacks, delays, or scrapping from the books entirely. Why break a trend? The Chase Tower has been the tallest in Phoenix for almost 40 years, and looks likely to remain the tallest in the near future. It seems that nothing can ever exceed its height ... like it's some kind of a sacred monument.
Some of this can be blamed on the current state of the economy and the housing market ... but most of the restrictions in height can be attributed to the bureaucrats from the FAA, as well as the NIMBYs, naysayers, and transplants with the "keep Phoenix flat" mentality (such as Miami Boy among many others). It's pathetic that the nation's fifth largest city can't have a skyline to be proud of.

I don't agree about this is to blame on the FAA or NIMBYs. The project has approved from the FAA and there haven't been any complaining from NIMBYs, I don't there will will be in the core of downtown. It simply has to do with the demand...right now, it simply isn't there.

NIMBYs & preservationists were protesting CityScape's western tower because of the fact that Patriot's Park would be destroyed. Granted, their ranting had nothing to do with the height of the towers ... but to say that there was no complaining from NIMBYs over this project is simply not true. NIMBYs and preservationists leave their feces everywhere in this city (unfortunately) ... even in the Central Corridor & downtown.
Also, the demand is there. The vacancy rate of downtown buildings is at its lowest in decades. More people are wanting to live closer to their centrally located jobs due to the gas prices & other factors ... and more companies are wanting their offices to be more centrally located. That being said, I would like to see more than just highrise condos going up. More corporate offices (large and small) belong in the downtown area. More hotels are needed as well. It makes no sense to bring in major sports, entertainment, and conventions, but have little in the way of hotel rooms. The new Sheraton isn't enough. The "W" would have been a major shot in the arm to downtown ... but there again, the damn preservationists put a halt to that!

If some of those developers had some foresight, they would have known that there will be future economic booms and increase in such demand, so it would have been better if they stuck with the original plans for the 44 floors on the mixed use tower, rather than have to meet future demands with another building somewhere else, and we all know the hassles they have faced here in the past, with many high rise projects, which never got past artists' drawings.
