What is play pool? And its maintenance? (how much, to buy)

I am planning to buy a house, but not sure what exactly Play pool means?

Also how much does it cost to maintain the pool per month?

I'm not positive of the definition, but I think I have one. My "play pool" is about 10k gallons and about 5.5' at its deepest point. So I can touch my feet to the bottom and keep my head above water everywhere. It's pretty affordable to maintain and a good bang for the buck, considering I swim every day between end of April and end of September. Chemicals are under $200 a year. I've had some pump and filter maint. work done recently to the tune of about $150 and I had to drain half of it recently to get the chemicals back in line. I don't know what it runs me in electricity, but my pump runs about 4 hrs. a night now and I'll bump it to 6-8 hrs. once it really gets hot. This is money I spend happily. I love my pool!

Generally a "play pool" describes a pool that is shallower in depth, usually 4-5 feet maximum, than a diving pool. Play pools will be deep enough to swim in, but never dive in a play pool.

The idea was so that you could stand at either end of the pool to play games like volleyball, without one party treading water in the deep end. They are usually easier to clean and heat as well.

Yes, they heat faster from the sun alone than a diving pool, because the water is not so deep (and there's just less water period). A lot of people like to just "hang out" in the pool, or swim laps, or, as suggested, play water games. A play pool works for all those things. And, they are a lot easier to clean.

Agreed, and cheaper to maintain, since the amount of chemicals needed is related to the amount of water in the pool.

6-15k gallons, it's not as deep. It's opposed to a diving pool which is anywhere from 5-12ft. So in my opinion, a play pool is good for kids obviously.
