Let's remember the context of these rankings. People want to feel safe. They look at these rankings to assess their risk of being harmed. Therefore, total crime statistics can be misleading. While auto theft is certainly important, it doesn't carry the same weight as being assaulted/killed.

To illustrate a point, let's say there are only two ranking categories: auto theft and assault. Let's assume Phoenix is ranked 1 in autotheft and 20th in assaults. Now let's pretend Washington D.C. is ranked 1st in assaults and 20th in autotheft. Both cities would be technically be tied with the same overall crime ranking but any reasonable person would feel far more safe in Phoenix than D.C.

That is a good point people forget to look into. It was the same with the kidnappings.

According to this, Phoenix metro area is ranked 116th *worst* of 347. Tucson is even worse.
