Gilbert would be outside your commute range; the west part of Chandler, close to the freeway, would probably work. Given the temporary nature of your assignment, you ought to be able to find something to rent that would work for you in a number of areas. Thanks to your husband for his service, and to you for supporting him in that career path. Just considering all the moving, alone, it's not easy.

Thank you We're looking forward to the change in scenery after being in NC. The last time we made the cross-country trek from AZ we had one kid and now we're heading back with three. After a while you just get used to the nomadic lifestyle.

I've looked on Google and compared travel times but it's hard to know what it will actually be like without driving it. I've been focusing on Chandler and East Mesa lately and saw some houses in our range but we'll have a better idea once we're out there.

Aside from shortcuts that don't make it online, the Google driving time estimates are pretty good. You'll notice lots of them give you a range which factors in rush hour traffic.

You mentioned earlier that you'd prefer to keep the commute to 35 minutes, give or take. Honestly, I can't see your husband making it from East Mesa to his post within 35 minutes, even on a good day. As observer said, Chandler (western portion) might not be too bad.

Please thank your husband (and yourself) for your service to our country!

Thanks for the input, and good to know that the rush hour times are fairly accurate. Looking in the opposite direction, about how far North could we live in Phoenix or Scottsdale to keep the commute within that time?

I'm looking at rentals and wondering if living to the West would also be an option? I'm not exactly seeing homes with the size/condition that I anticipated in the areas I'm looking. Child #3 is making their debut in the next month or so, so they need some room to spread out. We're entertaining the idea of renting somewhere for 6 months and then re-evaluating, so would somewhere like Goodyear be too far? It looks like the majority of the drive is on I-10E, is that usually a mess commute-wise?
