Is it normal for the mailboxes that have 20 homes or so to have no outgoing mail slot? What do most people do, drive to the Post Office to mail off one bill?

When I had a common neighborhood box the mail carrier would always take outgoing mail if I placed it in the front of my box.

Ours has an outgoing slot. I read a long time back that the USPS was getting rid of them in most areas because of theft, though.

My "gang mailbox" does not have an outgoing slot. Some of the ones in my neighborhood did have one as of not long ago, not sure if they still do. I mail stuff from my office, or there's a mailbox outside the grocery store. There is a theft issue that's caused them to get rid of many of the outgoing slots.

Some are paid for and maintained by the US Postal Service but most are property of the HOA.

Contact your HOA.

If you live in a high vandalism area then they may have been taken out because of what the kids were doing to them. And if you were a mail carrier and you found a deadly snake in one what would your response be?

Gotta love those kids.

I'm not in an HOA area. The ones in my neighborhood are the property of the USPS, I assume. In HOA areas, I would suspect that the government has an easement for those boxes, and that they aren't HOA property. That would not make sense, actually.

I believe you are correct, Observer.

Although I am only able to speak for my HOA Community, the Mail Boxes here belong to and are the full responsibility, including maintenance and security, of the USPS.

I don't know, don't mail anything anymore. I pay my bills online. I guess the occasional bill from lets say a Doctors office or something could be a problem.

Anyone notice there are no longer, or very few of the street corner outgoing mailboxes either? Or at least down here there aren't. When we found out in the HOA gang boxes the outgoing slot was blocked, we had to drive the few miles to the PO to mail anything. When we moved in February to the other end of town, I actually found an outgoing blue box at the corner gas station....
