Unhappy Gilbert: How is "The Edge at Lyon's Gate" Apts to Live?

I will be moving from Connecticut to Arizona and am about to sign a lease for 13 months at an apartment complex called "The Edge at Lyon's Gate" in Gilbert, Arizona. I've read reviews about it on Apartment Ratings.com, but there were only 14 reviews, 4 of which look like they were written by the management staff, and the other 10 were all rated bad. I would like to know if this is a good assessment of the place? There are around 245 units, and this website seems to only show bad reviews of most of the apartment complexes in the Gilbert, Chandler area. Are there any good apartments to live in that are rated well?

Also, what do you know about bug infestation in this place? My biggest worry is Scorpions, roaches and Black widow/Recluse spiders. I am petrified of spiders to begin with, and am terrified of scorpions. I know this place supposedly sprays once per month, but was also wondering if I should Bug Bomb my place once a month for a while? I have a French Bulldog, and worry about the pesticides, but if Arizona is that rampant with bugs, I don't know what else to do.

I'm having anxiety about moving due to these issues.

Those apartment ratings websites are notoriously negative. Happy people rarely take the time to post about their experiences. Take those reviews (all of them) with a grain of salt.

I have no exerience with that particular proerty, but someone may else may be able to help with details.

There's no rational reason to fear a "bug infestation." And I certainly would never consider using a bug bomb when the management is already including pest control as a regular service. Too many chemicals for humans and animals. Arizona is not "rampant with bugs." Your fears are unfounded. Relax and enjoy your move!

My friend who has lived there for 16 years told me about his house being infested with scorpions, and another house he rented that when he moved in he found 7 Black Window Spiders. He told me he also had a few roaches, but that was in an apartment complex. My mistake for asking him about his Arizona experience. My brother-in-law's son has lived out there for 10-12 years, and has only recently found 2 scorpions in his home. He has his house sprayed once per month by a company, as does the apartment complex I'll be moving into with the family. Thanks for the feedback. I hear so many stories about scorpions and many people say it's more of a problem in near the mountains or not farmed properties, or foreclosed homes, but it's still weird to see a Scorpion Sting map online. Thanks for the positive reply.

People from out of the area are often freaked out by the prospect of moving to an alien land overrun by scorpions, gila monsters, and rattlesnakes. In reality, most people never encounter any of those things. In my experience, there are far fewer "bugs" and creepy creatures here than the South or Midwest.

Moving in to a vacant home and/or one that has not had corners kept clean or had enough bugs around to be a good food source for the BWs could create the situation your friend found. Generally, you will have less of a problem with BWs, and scorpions, potentially (assuming you'd have one at all) in an apartment, particularly one that has regular spraying, than in a home. With regular spraying, I don't think you'll have a roach issue either. The bug issue is grossly overblown, both on this forum and elsewhere. Relax and enjoy your new home.

Thank you. This helps me. I've read so much on this and other forums, plus my friend didn't help! Last night I was letting my dog out and a carpenter wasp made its way into the house. I was on a hunt & kill mission. (I hate bees!) I guess I'm used to Connecticut's nasty bugs. I know I can spray for bugs, but I hear the scorpions are quite resilient. I know if you kill their food supply, they move on. I also know the bark scorpion is the deadlier one. I will be buying a black light flashlight, a yard stick and some duct tape. My brother-in-law's son told me that trick. Maybe my nephew will go hunting for me at night to make sure the coast is clear. I'd rather deal with bear! LOL! Anyway, thanks for easing my mind a little.

In an apartment that sprays regularly, I suspect your black light will gather dust. Safe travels!

Thanks. Has anyone experienced this apartment complex though? When I was there, I thought it was nice, but who knows what goes on at nights on weekends in there? Then again, it is apartment living. The reviews said the walls are paper thin. I wasn't able to view anything but a model, which is the usual deal.

Welcome to apartment living. It's the same in every state in the union.

The location is great! You'll be close to the 202 Freeway, and not far at all from San Tan Village, where you'll find shopping, restaurants and movies. If you have a dog, Cosmo's dog park is close, and also the semi-famous Joe's Farm Grill. Welcome!
