The estimate as of September, 2010 was 3.83 billion. But that's not the point of the post you are referencing which was that the Fed Govt is still funding transit projects. Let's not veer off track (no pun intended, really! ) too far.

If you had read the link you would have noticed that your number is for Phase I--to be completed in 2013, and will not even go to the airport, yet. Phase II will up the cost to 6.8, and take it to IAD.

I was NOT disagreeing with you. If even part of it was supposed to cost 3.8 billion in Sept 2010, your reported figure was going to be accurate. I tend not to use Wikipedia as an authoritative source for a lot of things, but I don't doubt those figures.

The brief detour was useful, but back to topic on the local issue, please.

Back to Phoenix, I had heard a mere 200 million for the extension from Montebello to Dunlap--3.2 miles.
It's been delayed for up to 15 years, but they are still doing quite a bit of work over there. Kind of puzzling. The big changes are underway at the El Caro Commercial Center on the former Golf Course, along Northern, with the extension of 21st AVe. North. Has anyone been by there lately?

If I understood correctly, the northbound extension of the light rail line along 19th Avenue is supposed to eventually end up at Metrocenter. Now, that's another area that could really use some revitalization! It will be interesting to see how much of an impact light rail will have on that west side, especially the Metocenter area when (or if) the light rail is finished through there.

Light rail needs to be extended to the west valley areas too.

Sometimes I think we are being neglected and the central and east valley areas are favored more.

There are plans to eventually put either light rail or commuter rail in the center median of I10 that will connect the west Valley areas. Unfortunately, that will likely be another decade or more before that happens. Meanwhile, I10 west remains one of the most unsightly freeways in the metro area because of that large dirt median with the ugly wire fences.

Also, while light rail MIGHT help revitalization of some areas, there still needs to be a good reason to have it ... in other words, people want to use it not only for commuting to & from work, but to get to & from venues, nightlife, etc. The west Valley is still very much lacking in those things, with the exception of Westgate, and possibly downtown Glendale. Even the area around Westgate is surrounded by hit & miss cookie cutter type of development and a good share of vacant land ... therefore, it's not very walkable nor mass transit friendly.
