We will soon be relocating to the Glendale area. We are "walkers" and have enjoyed Papago Park and the Canals when visiting family in the Scottsdale area. We would ideally like to be in a location where we can walk paths or trails right outside our door, or very near. Here in the Bay Area we walk the ocean bluffs about 4- 5 miles each day. We most likely will be renting an apartment - any suggestions of the better communities for us? Thanks! (We realize this will be happening in the wee hours of the morning much of the time)

I'd look between 35th and 67th, just north of the 101.

Thunderbird Conservation Park is your best bet for somewhere close. Parking lots on 67th and 59th.

The New River trail is 20some miles long. It's off of 75th.
Both North of the 101.

Thanks for info, all. I see this area on my Streetwise Phoenix map that I am wearing out! I'm sure we will spend a lot of time there. But what I was wondering - are there communities/apts complexes that offer the opportunity to just walk out your front door and get to walking paths or walk to restaurants, around a lake - that kind of thing. Places where you are not car dependent......

I use Get Your Walk Score - A Walkability Score For Any Address to help evaluate properties. A mid 70s number is very good for Phoenix. My apartment in Berkeley gets a 94. Just enter the address--covers many other countries, too.

I think the only development in the area with paths is Sierra Verde. Between 67th and 75th/Deer Valley and Beardsley. They do have a lake.
