Downtown Tempe or certain neighborhoods in central phoenix. Mabye downtown tempe especially. There, you can find some culture, healthy food, a lot of bike transportation, some nightlife, shows, and whatnot. Theres a bar in Tempe called Boulders and everyone there is like a rock climber or kayaker or some kind of outdoors person. There's plenty of microbrews on tap and in Tempe in general. Central PHX has these things too, though less centralized, you have to scout neighborhoods.

Downtown Tempe would no longer be a reverse commute and your whol commute would be much longer. If you really want to go with one of the historic neighborhoods, go with something around downtown and midtown Phoenix.

I would recommend Willo, any of the Encanto neighborhoods, or North Central Corridor. Willo is going to have few entertainment, dining, and shopping options that are walking distance, but the homes are really nice. Strictly based on the homes Willo would be my first choice. Encanto will have larger homes, but also some sketchier neighborhoods. North Central Corridor is a larger area encompassing many different neighborhoods and would give you the most options and best dining and entertainment choices.
