Depends on where in the Valley you live. I know Tempe has an active nightlife with many clubs & bars along the Mill Avenue strip ... as does downtown Scottsdale. Downtown Phoenix will probably be an after hours destination in the near future ... but it isn't really now unless there are games & concerts going on.

That brings me to the next item: concerts. The metro Phoenix area seems to get most (if not all) of the major artists & bands (current and past) who are on tour. There's also the Phoenix Symphony. Other than that, it depends on what your musical tastes are.

The Phoenix area is also one of the top regions in the country for professional sports ... however, right now in the doldrums of summer, the DBacks are about it. But come fall & winter, there'll be the Cards (NFL), Suns (NBA), and the Coyotes (NHL) playing. Each team has its own stadium, so there's a lot to choose from in that respect.

Shopping and dining. I don't know where to begin, but there's just about anything you can ask for. The Camelback Corridor (between approximately 20th Street & 32nd Street) has a wide variety of upscale shopping & dining ... as does many parts of Scottsdale. I personally prefer Japanese cuisine, especially the restaurants where the chefs cook at your table.

To cool off, try some of the water parks (Big Surf, Water World, etc.). If you're into outdoor activities (hiking, etc.), there's a lot to do ... but it's best to wait until October or so when it cools off a little. This time of year, I like to drive to the White Mountains in eastern AZ mainly for the scenery & the cooler temps. If you like exploring the state, try Sedona, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Karchner Caverns, etc. Many things to see & do!

Depends on what you want to do. Check out New Times paper for night life. It's free at every convenience store. The next couple mornings are going to be cool and nice for hiking in the nearby parks. Piestewa is popular, but the county parks (Estrella, White Tanks, Usury among them) have more trails and fewer people. The rim and white mountains north and east of the city have tall pines and cool temps. Take a drive on the Rim Road (300) for some awesome scenery.

Get a subscription to Phoenix magazine. They offer a comprehensive list every month of things to do and places to go. They include festivals, etc, that happen periodically - a year long subscription is very useful.

Well, I'd speculate and say that maybe he wants to go to a real, lively downtown, where you see that strange breed of two-legged (as opposed to four-wheeled) creatures called people, where you can stroll leisurely and window shop, take mass transit and have a drink in peace, sit at a bench and people-watch, have a cup of coffee/lunch/dinner on a pretty patio in fresh air, enjoying beautiful lights (other than 7-11, Circle K, and the local dollar store), skyline, beach/lake, etc. Moderator cut: argumentative - off topic

Priceless!!!

There are a few cool areas of the valley, but even the city is like a suburb. For those from the East, anyway. Not that I hate it, I hate some things, but I like some things too. Like the weather and the mountains, Flagstaff... let's see... I'm sure there's something else too.

But it ain't New York or Chicago.

And it wasn't supposed to be... The West was built after the car and the car took over. Garage-dominated houses, no sidewalks, businesses next door deliberately divided in a un-walkable way... and you can go on and on and on... Too bad the West Coast wasn't discovered first and all cool cities are located in the wrong climate zone... Of course, San Francisco, Portland, OR, and Seattle are nice, but the climate is hardly pleasant. While I love the weather and the beauty of San Diego and Orange County, it's still not the lifestyle that appeals to me. I think I like Chicago the best if we only could beam it up to Southern Arizona.

Ho hum. If the Phoenix area is so boring and disliked, why do all these people move here?! Ah, yes ... the sunshine & the climate.
()

The only explanation I can come up with for all these disgruntled transplants is: they must see pictures of mountains & silhouetted cacti against a multi colored sunset, and think that Arizona is going to be some kind of utopia ... only to move here & gripe about practically everything else. They're the ones who LOVE the sunny days (while totally clueless about our drought) ... but hate the traffic, hate the fast drivers, hate the lack of funding for schools, hate the right to work atmosphere, hate this, hate that!

No, we're not New York. And all I can say to that is: THANK GOD!!! Ya want New Yoawk? Why dun't ya move theyah?!
