Gilbert is not the best of the 3 given districts being they did not budget their money well and are short on funding. Their class sizes are oversized.

Stick with Chandler, there are good school districts and lots of nice places to live that are suitable for single moms and children.

I'm sure some lower-priced homes or rentals can be found that are in good safe areas with the market being what it is, even in Chandler.

I did not know that about Gilbert SD. That's too bad. My kids go to CUSD and we have been very happy.

I live in the area of your new job location and can tell you that, while there are some older communities around, the area is a great place for families. The Windmill Inn is right on Chandler Blvd. next to the mall. The schools are very good in that area of town (Kyrene district) and there also are plenty of daycare options. I wish you well and welcome to Arizona.

Does anyone have any advice for someone who is just starting out in that area? any ideas on where a nice place to raise kids is, not too expensive but near my job? I could transfer to Chandler or Surprise....Is chandler the better choice?
Chandler is a nicer area but more expensive. If I was on a budget and wanted the Arizona experience without the cost, I would probably live in Surprise. Surprise is a really nice city and you can get great deals there. I live in Chandler btw. If you can afford to, I would live in Chandler. I have friends who live in Scottsdale who lament the fact they didn't buy in Chandler because there are so many parks, pools and recreational activities as well as good schools, day care in addition to great shopping. I really want to move to Paradise Valley because I love the location but I'm so spoiled by Chandler because the city is so geared toward kids and families.

I live one mile down the road from Windmill Inn, I live off of Chandler blvd and it is a great area, close to everything. Alot of houses for rent in our area that are decently priced and very nice. Very safe area and the neighbors are great.
