I've browsed the Arizona Dept of Motor Vehicle site, but I still have a question that I hope someone here can answer. My daughter, my husband and I currently live in NY state. In two weeks, my daughter will be moving to Boston to attend graduate school. In 3 months, my husband and I will be moving to Scottsdale. My car and my daughter's car are both in my name as well as the leases. My question is......can my daughter register her car in Mass (in my name or hers) or do I have to register it in AZ??? I have no idea where to start.

Sue

If MA is like AZ, she can keep her car registered in NY while she's a student, she doesn't have to have MA registration. There's no reason to register that car in AZ, and you would have to bring it here to do it. So, I'd just keep it registered in NY.

If you want, you can also try Motor Vehicle Division. You can email them, call them, or send them a letter.

Once you move out here, you will need to get your car registered here. No need to get your daughters because she wont be living here.

I think the issue will come up at renewal though .... if you sell your NY residence where your car which your daughter uses is currently registered, how will the renewal work?

I would contact the MVD and see if they can point you in the right direction

If you are having AZ as your primary residence and are registering your other cars here in AZ, it seems like you would have to register that car as well

Not sure how there would be a way around it.

This is from the AZ MVD webpage

Quote:
Physical Inspection of the Vehicle

Physical inspection is not required on out of state vehicles if the owner has proof of ownership, such as a title and/or registration. The make, vehicle identification number (VIN), body style and other general vehicle information must be verified at an MVD or authorized Third Party office prior to registration. If there are obvious safety or mechanical flaws, registration may be denied until repairs are completed.
So it sounds like you can register the car your daughter is using without bringing it back to AZ - which would be difficult

It's your car - your daughter is just a user of it .... seems like it would be your registration

That's my read at least

I would think that the registration in NY could be done online like it is here.... I would contact the NY MVD for advice on how to proceed with the daughter's car while she is a student in another state. It makes no sense to me, even if you can, to register a car here (where it's generally more expensive than in a lot of other places) that is never going to be here.

It's not her daughters car though

It's her car

How do you register a car you own in a state you do not have an address in?

Not trying to be combative as I know such a question can read on the internet ... just really wondering about the mechanics of this

It wouldn't make sense to align registration, insurance, etc in a state where the car will never physically pass ..... however, when you own that car I honestly don't know how it can be avoided

Sue,

Be careful, the AZDMV really wants you to register the vehicle in the state. I moved to CA and still had my AZ plate for about 9 months, but my insurance recorded my CA address and the AZ DMV sent me a letter saying I had to "deinsure" the vehicle in AZ. Whatever the heck that means!! It also said I couldn't drive it in AZ or I would get a ticket!!! This letter made it sound like I couldn't even drive the car in the state of AZ to visit relatives or even take a vacation there!!

So I don't know if that will apply to you, but it may be a term you want to do a search on at the DMV website.

Since you say the vehicles are leased, what does your leasing agency and the contract say about it. They probably want to keep track of the vehicle(s) and may require you to register it where you are currently living.

Default Thanks for your responses!

I think I'm more confused now than ever. Like another poster said, the AZ DMV really wants you to register it in AZ so I think I'll start with my insurance company and see what they say. They previously told me not to worry about until November when we move out there. What kind of answer is that?? Well, I've got many other issues to work out pertaining to the move, so I guess I'll take their advice and not worry about it until then......one thing at a time.
