We live in Oregon, but are relocating to Phoenix this coming year. We love horchata and find it fresh at most small Mexican restaurants here. I can't help thinking of a funny family memory concerning horchata, though.
My husband and I traveled to Puerta Vallarta a few years ago with our oldest son, his wife and baby son. Our son wanted to have some authentic horchata. We went to the old, non-English speaking part of town, and found a lady with a horchata cart, standing out in the middle of a deserted square. She was stirring it up in a 5 gallon jar with a short spoon and her ARM!
My son proceeded to order some, served in a plastic bag with a straw. He drank and enjoyed it.
My hubby deemed the drink "sweaty armpit juice" and that has been our family joke from then on. He still love to drink it, but always call it sweaty armpit juice.
