Wink "muscle" antique car registration, inspection

Have a 68 Pontiac GTO. Reading on AZ DMV site 66 and newer have to pass immersions test. Or exempt "collector" reg that limits miles to like 1k, I do that here in NH.

How hard is the test for these old cars to pass?? Its all restored, but motor has been modified.

Is this going to be a big hassle???

Thank you

We restored a 64 1/2 Mustang and a 67 VW Beatle and both passed the test without any trouble at all. The VW when we first took it to have it tested before we put in a new engine, failed the test. We took it to a local mechanic just to fix the little things then we were rolling. Our Mustang, before the restoration, new engine, passed just fine.

The specs for cars that old are pretty lenient - it's a dyno-test with the sniffer hooked up, a check of the gas cap, and a quick visual for tampering... no need to tamper with a 68, it should have just had a pcv valve.

The gas cap is the most common fail for cars that are new or old... The gasket has to be clean and supple for it to seal right.

The dyno check is actually fun to watch. If the car is tuned properly, it'll pass.

I'm in a similar boat, but with a modified '91 MR2 Turbo - hoping it's not going to be too difficult to pass. When are you heading west? I'm picking up the moving truck on Tuesday

I'm moving to Mesa for now - friends' roommate moved out, so I'll move in. I'm hoping to buy a duplex before the end of next year (within a reasonable commuting distance from Tempe).

If you want to look me up in February, feel free!

I've always wondered how the semi-radical blower motor I want to build would pass emissions here as well. They tend to run a bit "fat" at idle so I'm guessing they wouldn't be too pleased.

Do a little more research. In AZ, if your car is over 15 y/o and has collector car insurance, you are exempt from emissions testing. You will need to park in a secure garage and not drive to work to get a collector car policy.

Unless info is old. DMV or town site said 66 and newer pass imisions. Then collector was for little mileage like 1000-1500. If not the case that is great I can work with that.

Default .

It is a hassle.

I could write a long post about the nightmare I had with my bike (yes, the repeal of bike testing does not matter if you are on a suspended registration from before the repeal) and my classic car (68 Bonneville), but I won't.

I'll just say this: emission testing here in AZ is a complete RACKET, and you are better off registering your vehicle(s) out of state. You will see tons and tons of out of state registrations by snowbirds for this very reason.

If you have a relative from your home state who's address you can use (assuming that state does not require you to emission test or get tabs in person), that is by FAR the best way to go.

At the risk of being censored, the history of the AZ emissions law is pretty interesting in a "wow this is 1925 Chicago level corruption" kind of way. Look it up sometime if you want some entertaining reading.

Welcome to Arizona
