Hi All,
Long time lurker, first time commentor. I'm thinking about going to school at AT Still University for the next 4 years starting in July. The school is at the intersection of Power and Recker (Baseline is a more major road). I was thinking about getting a house in the area (3-4 mile commute max) and was wondering what people's opinions were of the area.

Are there any streets/subdivisions I should stay away from?

After I graduate I would probably stay in the area and work for a few years to reduce my loan debt to more manageable levels so I would be using the house for a good 5-7 years and attempting to sell it.

Any thoughts about this?

I'm an early 20s single guy so schools aren't a big deal. I've been around and know that I could enjoy myself for a few years there.

Before we get into this discussion, may I ask a question? How are you going to qualify for a mortgage? AND how are you going to pay the mortgage payment and all of the other expenses of being a homeowner?

And what will be your budget for this house? I assume you have a vehicle?

Power and Recker run parallel to each other. But, if you're talking Power and Baseline, it's a very nice area. It's close to the freeway, shopping, restaurants, movie theaters, hospital......just about everything one would need.

A couple of my clients are dental students. One bought a home in Mesa. The other bought a home in Gilbert a couple miles south of the school.

My parents were going to help me out with the house. If I never ended up selling the house, they could also use it to retire in. After I finished school I would be making the payments.

My budget is anything under 100k, at most 110k.

Competition is high for those homes, but they are available.

If there is ANY chance your parents will be taking this house over when they retire, do everyone a favor and avoid a two story. Or at least get a house where the master is downstairs.
