I'm house hunting, and there is a pretty decent house I'm interested in. Only problem? It's missing kitchen cabinets. As in, they are completely gone. It's not a huge kitchen. So I'm just wondering if anyone can give me an estimate for how much it should cost to have the kitchen cabinets installed back in?

I won't be needing anything too top-of-the-line... just something that looks decent, and functions. So how much would it cost to buy the materials and have them installed?

Well, I am sure it can vary but here are some thoughts - there are some recycled home improvement stores (one on 43rd Avenue and Camelback). I have seen some VERY nice collections for next to nothing; you would have to pay a carpenter and buy a counter top. When we were looking, my husband found a place that builds them to your specs (I think it was very near the freeway (I-17/I-10) about 7th street on the east side of the street in a nondescript building - should be in phone book and they were well under $1000 (for 16feet?). I see ads in Craig's List. Full page ad in The Republic for a place called Diamond Kitchen and Bath - we looked but thought they were a little expensive. Always Home Depot or Lowe's if you're just looking for estimates!

I'm a bit surprised your realtor wasn't able to give you a guesstimate.

You are looking at between 15,000 to 20,000. The materials and labor costs a lot. I'm sure there are cheaper ways to do these but you get what you pay for. The cabinets is what makes the job so expensive. Also, installing these will take some time. You are realistically looking at 4-6 weeks. It may not be worth replacing the cabinets. If you don't like the color but generally like the cabinets, you can stain them which will save you a lot of money. Whatever you do, don't go through Lowes or HOme Depot, they do a terrible job and charge a premium. They outsource cheap installers to make a profit and don't always honor or provide the insurance you think you will get when one of their contractors messes up.

I'd check out Adams Bros Interiors. I've had several clients use them, and they were very pleased.

Builders grade cabinets are about 100 bucks each. The double under the sink one is about 170, and it is the toughest to install. An 8 foot section of counter-top is about 80 bucks. Take those prices and double. Kitchen remodel could run 3-30,000. I bought mine at Lowe's.

I would budget 10k for a very basic installed job. There is so much more to consider that add cost and complexity. How many walls, windows, appliance openings, number of drawers, islands, Electric, plumbing, flooring lighting, wall repair, unlevel floors, types of drawer boxes, guides, handles, hinges on and on. I sell and install closet organizers and I can take a closet from 2k to 12k just with options.

Get an estimate but I think Azriver had a good ballpark unless you are doing it yourself.

Take measurements and determine what you need and go to Home Depot. That will be a start. They have all types and sized of cabinets.

You can also go to several cabinet suppliers, again with measurements, and they will draw a cabinet plan for you in a few minutes.

They'll tell you the delivery and installation costs. You can then do more comparison shopping.
