Perhaps it depends on where you come from. But if you are from the East Coast (like me) or the West Coast no the people in Phoenix are not rude by any means.

Like most rational people they are couteous upon first encounter. The few incidents cited on here well thats going to happen in any sprawling metro area approachig 4 million people. To judge a city/metro on those incidents is ridiculous.

But are they friendly? Not particularly. Its an area of walls, gates and closing garage doors. Streets devoid of people particularly in the oppresive heat. So going from courteous to a real effort of friendship is a long jump.

I think you're dead on. I live in Maryland and have been up & down the East Coast. I know when I encounter rude, obnoxious people

And I think that some people are juding the PHX metro by a few random encounters. Don't get me wrong, nobody should ever have to dodge beer bottles while bike riding, but those incidents seem pretty isolated.

I could definitely see how the heat would keep people from being openl friendly with others. Even here in MD, we wouldn't have many friends if it weren't for work, church & tennis (for me).

Thats why I stated that its not the city of Phoenix in general, its the elements that come with the bigger areas. Crime, rudeness, rage is everywhere, just some areas more rare than others.

Yes, just like the movie The Weather Man. Don't laugh, it's not funny at all-- last year a city of Tempe worker was hit in the head by someone throwing an energy drink can-- and has permanent brain damage for the rest of his life. There is a lot of human trash here. However, I'll admit most people here are just fine and fairly friendly. It's just that the trash here is REALLY bad.
That's terrible, but at least it wasn't someone driving next to you who suddently decides to take out his gun and point it at you like in Detroit! Very scary!

So some mixed experiences here in one of the areas I'm considering moving to. So the unfriendliness....it is the cold, distant kind of unfriendliness you see in New England or the in your face outright hostility and derision you see in the NY and Philadelphia and DC areas? Here outside DC and Baltimore its a mix of both.

Are native Arizonans nicer than transplants from the Northeast and Calif?

I also suspect that like in anywhere else, some of the hostile attitudes stems from the thug mentality of many illegals. Where I live the illegals are among the most hostile and rude people. They actually get annoyed if not offended right in your face if you don't understand their broken English and ask them to repeat something. This happens whever I go to McDonalds now. And this is in Maryland, 2000 miles from the border.

A nicely created fake INS badge would fix that immediately!

Not the few I have encountered. When I first moved to Phoenix I found the people odd, as odd as I find the Californians. One day they say hi and the next day they pretend they have never seen you in their life. I found the people in lower Glendale 51 ave and Olive to be more friendly and have some sense of community then I did in Gilbert. I probably would have stayed in that area if it wasn't getting meth infested. I'm not fond of the NY attitude but I wasn't used to that hi one day and who are you the next. It was weird to me. I also met someone from Cali who was pregnant and said she was going to the yard to jump on her trampolione to help go into labor. I thought that was weird and dangerous. I'm not trying to generalize the state but I'm saying the people were odd to me. I learned to melt into the attitude, I lived there for so long, after awhile it's not odd anymore and I learned to be content.

Native Arizonans are very relaxed and easy going people, even native Phoenicians are soft spoken and calm...the rude people are from the east coast ,the crazy people are from california ,the drug dealers come from mexico ,and the white trash comes from texas. Theres just too many people from out of state here. They dont consider arizona their home so they feel no need to make it better, it sucks to them so why make the effort.

hmm.. first month I was here, my husband and I were taking a walk. Some dude passed by in a car, rolled down his window and threw a drink at me. First month of going to school, I was walking to college and some guy passed by and called me a insert racial slur. During the first few months I was learning to drive, just the blatant disregard for driving rules astonished me. I realize this is characteristic of big cities. But I spent most of my life in Toronto, and I think someone called me a racial slur once when I was 10 and I've never had a drink thrown at me. Consequently, I was more than just a little angry. I've lived here for around 4 years now, and nothing bad has really happened (when you minus everything that is traffic/car related). Maybe I've learned to assimilate? I've also stopped walking outdoors... But to be fair, I've met some great people and have had a lot of positive experiences.
