Don't know about the schools -- we're retired. The reputation is much better than Hawaii's though for public schools.

Sales tax in Goodyear is 10%. There's a 6.5% Arizona sales tax then the county and local municipality both add on to that. So, it varies from town to town. And, the greater Phoenix metro area is made up of many (10+) towns that seem to be no more than neighborhoods -- but, are actually incorporated municipalities. Goodyear, Avondale and Litchfield Park, for instance, pretty much all run together -- but, the sales tax rates are quite different.

What they say about dry heat is true -- it is much more tolerable. BUT . . . once you hit 105 or so degrees. It's really, really hot. We suffered horribly last summer (or first), but will do better this year -- partly because we no more what to expect and how to adjust (somewhat). The dryness itself has been at least as serious a shock as the heat. We are still suffering a lot with skin issues from the dryness.

Hope this is helpful.
When it comes to weather, what is the wind like? I lived in Vegas, so I understand 'dry heat', however does the wind blow much, never, always?

Thanks for any info!

This is not as windy a place as Las Vegas and some other smaller cities in AZ. Wind is not much of an issue in the summer until our "monsoon" season starts, when you will have wind (sometimes with a lot of dust) as the storms come in in the evening.

Thanks, Don! That's really helpful. I hope your skin gets better!

I've actually lived in estrella for most of my life(one of the few who have seen it when it was actually nothing) Estrella is a really nice community to raise kids, it's really safe, and throughout our life we were allowed to run around the area and my parents had no problem with it. It is however isolated from everything else. It's about a 8mile drive to the freeway(at least) and a few more until you get into town. we do have a gas station, a pizza place, subway, safeway, pool area, so it does have a bit here.

As far as scottsdale, that's a drive. It's about a 1.5 hr drive around 7 and the same around 5 when I'm coming home from school.

Goodyear in general is nice though, if you'd like to get closer to the freeway as well. it's nice and open and you get away from the traffic of the metro area.
