According to Forbes Magazine, the City of Mesa Arizona is now the 7th safest city in America. Forbes took FBI statistics from 2010 to confirm this.
I'm pretty happy about this since I just moved to Mesa last June.
Mesa doesn't have the greatest reputation on here but I have found most of Mesa (not all) to be a very safe area.
I'm sure some will not agree with this but I'm perfectly happy and I have always felt very safe in my travels around town.

Forbes: Mesa is Nation's 7th Safest City (http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news/crime/mesa-safest-city-12-20-2011 - broken link)

I was surprised to hear Mesa was the on the list, because I have been reading alot on the boards here mesa is not the safest area. What parts are Mesa are the good parts? Bad parts?

The asterisk is that the survey is of cities over 250,000 population. So cities like Scottsdale, Gilbert, Goodyear, Surprise, and Litchfield Park aren't part of the survey. Glendale and Phoenix are that large in the metro area and both of them are not as safe, on average, as Mesa, I wouldn't think. Chandler is large enough to have been considered. I would think it is a safer place than Mesa in general, but it does have a nasty core, so maybe that is it. As with any cities in the metro, there are good and there are bad areas. None are uniformly safe or unsafe.

In answer to the question above, Mesa gets safer and more expensive going from west to east.

Although Mesa is defined as a large city it is really a large suburban area.

That naturally makes it a pretty safe place to live.

Anyone who goes into Mesa and disagrees with how safe it is will be robbed and beaten to a pulp.

Good point. Heck, even Phoenix is not a city in the sense that many think of as a city.

Believe me, where I'm originally from Phoenix seems like Chicago.

I would say Downtown Mesa and parts of North Mesa are the worst parts. East Mesa is pretty safe.

It's hard to generalize. There are affluent parts in north Mesa and east Mesa. There are bad parts sprinkled throughout. It's very neighborhood-specific, and even within a neighborhood there are lower income and much higher income subdivisions, typically.

Forbes rates New York City at #10. Yet, http://www.city-data.com/city/New-York-New-York.html has a crime index of 243 and it is lower than Mesa rated #7 of 286 (see http://www.city-data.com/city/Mesa-Arizona.html ).

My (inaccurate) perception was that New York City wouldn't make the safest 100 large cities. I also had a perception that Mesa had some fairly seedy areas. My perception of both NY and Mesa has lifted.
