I'm fond of Eucalyptus spathulata, smaller than most and narrow leaves. Evergreen but does shed some leaves now and then but not terrible like some can be.

If you do go palo verde I would go with the Desert Museum hybrid. It doesnt seem to be near as messy has no thorns and grows fast.

I have no idea on the life span of the tree because the hybrid variety is only about 20 years old.

Orchid trees are also nice and ours never seems to loose its leaves. The Chinese Pistache however while gorgeous does seem to be messy.
