My wife and I are looking to add a 2nd home in the Surprise area as a vacation spot. Our ages in lower 50's. Suggested areas someone from the area would suggest to purchase. We are active, love baseball, golf and shopping.

Shopping is limited in Surprise, is the a reason you picked Surprise? If shopping is a priority maybe north Phoenix or some east valley cities. Surprise is a long way from the rest of the valley and a long way from the airport if you plan to fly to your vacation home.

Marley Park is very nice, but you will drive a bit for big shopping. If you are on Bell around the Kingswood Park area, there are lots of stip malls there. Have you looked at Vistancia, north Peoria? The homes are still low and the community is very lovely with 3 pools, walking trails, gyms and an upscale Safeway center right at the entrance. You have big box stores 4 miles down the road at the 4 corners of Lake Pleasant/Vistancia Blvd. Have fun hunting.

Surprise is an excellent area for a second home. There are many second home owners in Surprise you will not be alone.

For shopping and dining there are plenty of local options (there is even a Culvers now) and if you are a serious shopper Arrowhead Mall is just about 20 minutes down Bell Rd where you can find every type of clothing, furniture, specialty store imaginable plus movie theaters and every dining option you could wish for.

Here is a good link:

Hi Matt,
I'm a 2nd home owner in Surprise (I'm in my late 40's). Surprise has 107,000 people. There is no shortage of restaurants and shopping but there are times when I need to drive to the Arrowhead area.

I predict that there will be a lot more shopping in 3-4 years. I bought in Marley Park. IMHO, it's the best development in the area. The homes range from $125K (1700 sq foot) - $275K ($3700 sq foot).

DM me if you have any more questions.

Perhaps, you have a budget....Surprise is Commuter Snail, with very low rent PSF. However, if you don't intend to rent it out, it would be worth a look. It would also be worth looking at the HOA's books.....
One should also consider how 5$ per gallon gasoline will effect demand in that area, along the railroad tracks.

Read his post. He wants to buy a 2nd home for vacationing and he is looking for neighborhood recommendations. He wants to consider spots close to golf and shopping (and probably close to the Surprise ball fields because he likes baseball). Hence, he isn't looking to rent it out or commute.

How is your post related to the topic?

I can get to Sky Harbor in 40 minutes from our Surprise home.....I wouldn't call that a "long way". 303 will be a multi-lane loop in a few years from Bell Ave. to I-10 which will make that trip even faster.

"Shopping is limited in Surprise"

Are you joking?

one should really consider what it will be like to sell......might not be that easy to find someone else, who only wants a vacation home in exurbia. Where are you NOT close to golf and shopping in The Valley.

Surprise has tons of golfing and shopping. 6 or 7 in the city plus many more within 10-20 mins http://www.thegolfnexus.com/cities/AZ/Surprise. Shopping is also available, many stores. Two kohls, Target, Walmart, Sams, best buy, lowes, home depot, many smaller shops. Arrowhead and Westgate are 20mins away (Costco and Malls). Plus construction on Prasada has started. There are many places to eat, including non chain places. Spring training in Surprise with 3 more venues close by. That is 8 MLB teams if you are keeping track, including the White Sox. Now if he is a Cubs fan that is a long drive to Mesa. Oh, Houses sell like hot cakes in Surprise if the homes are priced right. The house around the corner sold for $215,000 in January (yes that much and no it wasn't in Sun City Grand). Of course there are tons of prices to pick from; from the 90,000's to the 1,000,000's.
