No problem! I hope you find the perfect place for you!
As you can see, I have really only lived in the north valley my whole life (except for a year in central/downtown phx). There are so many other areas and we have plenty of people here that can vouch for those areas.

So, if you live in a neighboring city and drive to Scottsdale everyday, please help me figure out what neighborhoods are within reason relating to traffic. We don't really have traffic in my little ol town so I'm bracing myself.

This is NOT a good idea unless the job pays a lot of money. It is 40 miles one way from my place in Scottsdale to Surprise. There is a lot of traffic coming from that direction and you will spend no less than one hour driving each way and you will spend a fortune on gas. I would buy a home that isn't that far away. There are plenty of places in the north phoenix area that you could afford. I am speaking from experience here. A friend used to make the drive, she got traffic ticket after traffic ticket as there are unfair speed traps along the way, she spent hours per day in her car, she was late to work regularly due to traffic and or accidents and or construction and she spent hundreds on gas per month-in a honda. She became nearly depressed and highly aggitated as the traffic here is downright dangerous. I am BEGGING YOU TO RECONSIDER THIS. Also, our planet doesn't need the emmisions. We have a lot of pollution advisory days here due to too much emmissions. PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. Look into closer areas. In addition, if you were to consider south scottsdale/tempe which is much closer, you can get in for the price you are looking at and get to work in a more decent drive down the 101. I hope this has helped. If you want to send a private message for further info, I would be happy to help.

I agree with the others here that you would want to keep in the North and Northeast Phoenix area and the area around the hospital itself is good. My son, who also is studying to be a nurse, recently worked in that area for about 2 years and he lived and still lives in the Northeast Phoenix area. It took him less than 30 minutes driving even in rush hour. You don't even have to take any freeways to get there because Scottdale Healthcare is on Shea Blvd. which goes all the way from Northeast Phoenix to Scottsdale. Where will your youngest be going to nursing school? Will any of your children be living with you here?

Welcome soon to AZ!
Surprise is a nice community; however, I agree I would not choose a home there if you plan to work in Scottsdale. Driving every day on Bell Road between Surprise and Scottsdale would not be enjoyable. I agree that north Phoenix is the area for you to look. I also agree that Arrowhead is nice. It is beautiful and in a good location. Can anyone who knows about Arrowhead tell us what they have for community events?
I'm asking because when we house hunted here we only looked at the newer master planned communities (MPC). We did that because we were moving from a MPC in another state and loved how the events brought the entire subdivision together. We made a lot of friends much quicker and we felt like our whole community was family. To me, spending lots of money for a house is so much more than just buying a home, a person is also buying into a community. A community where a person wants to feel welcome and to make a lot of new friends.
Here we looked at Vistancia, Anthem, Estrella Mountain Ranch, Verrado, and a few other smaller communities. We ended up choosing Vistancia because of the location, mountain views, awesome amenities, excellent schools, and centrally planned community events. Vistancia does a great job of providing lots of opportunities for residents to meet and have fun with each other. So much so that we now feel like we're family. For adults without children, we have men's poker, ladies' bunko, wino's club, walking club, adult basketball, karate, kickboxing, mat pilates, meditation group, mountain biking club, social volleyball, swimming, tennis, golf as well as other events occuring in the next few months such as a photography class, a charity walk, a Habitat for Humanity charity building event, and several festivals. Depending upon your age, you may also want to consider Vistancia's Trilogy, which is an amazing 55+ community. Home prices in Vistancia range from $169,000 to over $1 million.
Also, don't worry about what you've read about road rage. I've lived here for several years now and haven't seen or experienced any yet.

Thank you for your advice. I too am concerned about the environment and try and not use any more fossil fuel than is necessary. I am smart enough to learn from others mistakes and think I will stick to NE Phoenix and the areas some of you have suggested. This has been a tremendous help and anybody who thinks the people in Phoenix aren't great must not have met ya'll!
