Does anyone know if tickets are available through legal non-TicketMaster means? I'm a big Michigan St. fan, and the TicketMaster site said no available seats, but I have to think there's some other option. Maybe Stub Hub with distraught Missouri fans will unload?

I don't do sporting events but I'm an inveterate concert-goer. I prefer lesser-known bands in small venues, but sometimes someone I discover in a small venue takes off and moves to arenas (like that Springsteen fellow, for instance). The arena tickets I want always sell out in five minutes, given that TicketMaster is such an absurdly unethical, money-grubbing institution. In spite of that, I've NEVER missed a show I wanted to see and I've never paid more than 20% over the face value.

My methodology: First, you cannot go with friends and expect to sit together. If you do, be willing to take single tickets and meet up after the game. Go to the box office as soon as it opens a day before the event takes place. (In the case of a series of events like a basketball series, go the day before the FIRST event.) See if they have seats that have opened up once the event is set up. If you don't get one right away, quiz the ticket taker if s/he has any advice on getting venue tickets for what you want to see.

If you can't get a seat (they are often weirdly placed) from the box office, go to the event well before it starts and try to buy a ticket from someone who has an extra. You have to be bold — circulate saying "does anyone have an extra ... I'm not a scalper." Most people who show up with an extra have a friend who copped out on them and you will be sitting with them. They don't want to sit by a crank so the nicer you are, the more likely you will get a ticket at face value. It's surprising how many people come to these things in groups with one extra ticket.

If you only want to sit with Michigan State people, dress in your native costume. Good luck.

Stubhub has full packages from $145, semifinals from $100 and finals from $54.

it's the sweet 16 round of the NCAA tournament - it could start at 4am and it wouldn't matter

Hmmm, I can only consider Saturday's Elite 8 game, so if I wait until Thurs night or Fri morning to know if they advanced, not sure if I could get Stub Hub tickets in time for Saturday.

You'll be able to - many tickets are electronic now, so it's a matter of just printing them
